For me, Buscemi is key, & his chemistry with Birch. Casting & performance luck is sometimes nearly everything. I can't think of any other 2 choices I would've endeared with.

I recall from the commentary track that the studio wanted anybody but Scarlett Johansson. Not sure why-- she'd done 9 films already and acquitted herself well.

The teenager in me (was 16 when this was released) looks at that and thinks how nice the color red is. Why didn't Thora's career take off like Scarlett's?

She's legitimately good balance for Birch & both their characters. I think it's a strong trait for this film in a way this isn't on ScarJo's pedestal of rockstar roles. 2001 ScarJo would outshine 2021 ScarJo.
