2001 Space Odyssey. It's like you took Kronos Quartet and made it even more weird AND boring on top of that. Not to mention the Danube waltZ. It seems like cheating to count that. I was going to say that, but I decided not to. If I was going by movies scores made up of mostly pre-existing music, my favorite movie score is The Shining. The only part of the score that was composed for the movie is the opening theme.

For me nothing with beat Danny Elfmans masterpiece. It gives me chills is so good. Both of his Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) soundtracks, were so great and powerful to hear for the first time, and fitted so well in with Tim Burton and his gothic fantasy of Gotham City. Anyway, of those I love the most, from the original soundtrack, I guess it is hard to leave out the haunting and majestic sounds of Up the Cathedral and the dark and tragic Childhood Rembered:

Of course, then you have the legendary ones, like Basil Poledouris and his masterpiece that is the Conan soundtracks, and where the thunderous opening cut:
and
Is surely among some of the absolute best and most impressive music, that were made for these larger than life movies and characters, like Conan the Barbarian during the 80s.
