Back in December 2015, the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was dropped as a complete surprise, and it got fans annoyed because of the choice of soundtrack and a tone similar to Guardians of the Galaxy. Then July 22 came, and eventually (most) Trekkies ended up surprised. Here's what I thought
Star Trek Beyond was a fun film, there's no denying that. It has good humour, great action scenes and a solid storyline. One of the more noticeable differences between this and the 2009 film is that this goes more to the roots of Trek, given that Star Trek was Justin Lin's childhood. And also written by a Trek fan: Simon Pegg, who also reprises his role as Scotty. Simon Pegg and Doug Jung's writing was pretty decent, a definite improvement upon the writing of Into Darkness. Scotty is definitely given more to do in Beyond than in Into Darkness, same goes for Bones. This writing is definitely better and more to the roots of Trek, with a mystery building up throughout the film, with that mystery being Krall and his plans. Eventually this mystery is discovered, and the plot twist is revealed. Although that said, the story did have some small plot holes that do leave you scratching your heads, like the big Krall reveal towards the end. It was confusing how Lt Uhura just conveniently knew.
another flaw is the story does go rather slow at first. It takes a good 30mins to get going. But it does pick up after the Enterprise is destroyed in a breathtaking set-piece, it definitely shows the payoff of the buildup to the destruction of the Enterprise that Trek '09 and Into Darkness hinted at. And it is definitely the best, and most emotional and dark, of the destructions of the Enterprise.
overall, a fun entry to the Trek reboot trilogy and another action packed part of the Kelvin Timeline. Even if it does have its flaws, but these flaws are rather small and don't ruin the film or take you out of it in any way. 10/10

I've enjoyed the reboot series overall. The 2009 film is still my favorite overall but this one was certainly the most flat out fun.

This one easily had the best action. It might be my favorite of the three.

Without a doubt my least favorite movie in the new series. I must be missing something, because all of you have said the action was great and I thought it was easily the most standard, anti-climatic, me action in the entire (new) series.

First one was good and had some gravitas, Into Darkness was abysmal fan-wink but Beyond was a decent romp.

I thought this was the worst one. I wasn't surprised this ended up a fresh on rotten tomatoes. It felt very low budget, colors didn't feel like previous trek movies, too dark in some scenes and felt very slow and not very exciting.
If this was supposed to be more like the original trek then it just shows that the original was not as good as everyone remembered. Next generation was better anyway.

Just watched this for the second time. I love that it's character and adventure focused, though I still couldn't explain the plot if you asked me to. Simon Pegg really got it and I wish he would write more, Justin Lin is no Brad Bird but he's much better than Abrams.

My one significant issue with the film was the 'beat & shouting' to destroy the swarm , surely they could've come up with a better idea than that

Being a fan of ST, but not a purist, I had no problem with the re-launch. I liked Beyond very much, especially the humorous touches. Yet I felt sad when I first saw it, because it reminded me of the tragic, unfair, and way-too-early death of Anton Yelchin. Is that the fault of Beyond? Of course not! Still, I couldn't help making that association. Also, I blame Paramount for not doing much more publicity regarding ST's 50th anniversary.

Definite improvement over Into Darkness and I loved the hilarious opening scene.
