Do you feel strongly one way or the other?

Butter, it took me years to even try gravy, and only roast beef, or turkey, I won't touch chicken or sausage gravy.

Neither, but I would definitely take (brown) gravy if I was really hungry and there weren't other choices.

The only acceptable use of gravy is in a poutine.

Butter is a requirement for mashed potatoes. Salt and pepper too? When I mash them I put in about half a stick of butter. So I get the best of both worlds. Butter and gravy.

For dinner, gravy, but only if it's freshly made (never canned), and made from the beef, fowl or lamb from that night's dinner.
For breakfast, butter. Leftover potato dishes, or rice, are my favorite breakfast. Gravy is not a morning fare, for me

My mom's uncle Jake was a butter-and-egg man.
Sometimes I wonder if I should undergo hypnosis to not be grossed out by both, and desire/enjoy them.
Jake had an intimidating look and was the mean one of the two brothers no one liked, but I doubt that had anything to do with anything. Didn't know he was a butter/egg guy until well after he died.

I like mashed potatoes with butter, but also like mashed potatoes and white gravy with chicken, and brown gravy with beef.
My mother-in-law always put lots of butter (a whole stick) in the potatoes (5 lbs.) when she made them and then added 1 cup of sour cream and 8 oz. of cream cheese and beat it all together. Extremely unhealthy, but extremely delicious! They could be made ahead of time and re-heated or placed in freezer containers and frozen.

Either one. But probably prefer gravy.

I’ve always been gravy, butter sounds borderline cheap and barbaric to me. Gravy is right up there with hot sauce as something that goes with almost anything.
