Not a way I wish to live.

I vehemently disagree with this. A lot of people do agree though, which is why conflicts are so easily escalated and get quickly out of hand, both at the interpersonal and international geopolitical levels.

An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind, but I do agree with self-defense.

Not a way I wish to live. So, he pulls a knife. What do you do?

Not a way I wish to live. So, he pulls a knife. What do you do? Never dealt with that in almost 50 years. I can't live my life worrying about what ifs.

So, he pulls a knife. What do you do? It's too hypothetical a question. It would depend on the circumstance and situation. It can't possibly be answered, unless experienced in the moment. Let me rephrase. He pulls a knife. You have a knife and a gun on your person, unseen by the person who pulled the knife. What do you do?

Let me rephrase. He pulls a knife. You have a knife and a gun on your person, unseen by the person who pulled the knife. What do you do? Hypothetical still. Why would I have a knife or a gun on me in the first place? I agree with this. I don't carry a knife or a gun. I just live my life and work a job. If the world turns deeper into anarchy, I may consider it. For self defense, of course.

Well according to the movie you've quoted (The Untouchables, if I'm not mistaken) the enemy isn't felled by those who tried that tactic, but by a pencil-pusher, so that tactic didn't really work there.

I don't know how to use a knife and I am not going to die trying to figure it out.

Are there other people around? What does he want? Is he talking? You need to give more information if you want people to make an informed decision.

The Chicago Way gives no more info, but it does STRONGLY SUGGEST that you don't pull a gun unless you are willing to use it.

There is an earlier movie that has almost the same idea-phrasing. Wish I could remember the actor who said it.
I am thinking George C Scott in the New Centurions but will have to rewatch to confirm.
Anyway I think there are times when force is all it comes down to. One wishes this wasn't the case but have you ever been in a situation where you were bullied and had to resort to strong language or fists? I have. Sometimes force, verbally or physically, is the only way to get respect/peace. In the case of Capone as depicted in the movie is that he is beyond reasoning, so the only thing he can understand and the only thing that works is greater force than he uses.
But did the Chicago way actually work? I thought Capone was brought down by taxes.

I don't remember George C Scott's Andy Kilvinsky saying that in THE NEW CENTURIONS. But who can forget Robert De Niro's Ace Rothstein in CASINO telling us that "no matter how big a guy might be, Nicky (played by Joe Pesci) would take him on. You beat Nicky with fists, he comes back with a bat. You beat him with a knife, he comes back with a gun. And if you beat him with a gun, you better kill him, because he'll keep coming back and back until one of you is dead."

I know it was an older movie, and the dialogue was pretty close. Damn this Alzheimers. I am pretty sure the writer was Stirling Silliphant which is why it could have been New Centurions.
I am going to watch it again to find out.
