Was it C3PO's resemblance to their God and the inspirational story they were told about the saga? Maybe, but footage shows that the Ewoks had previous encounters with the Empire that were less than peaceful.

The original ROTJ novel actually goes into this with a scene where Wicket implores the rest of the village to help the Rebels.
In the end, it's very similar to the Ents in LOTR. The Ewoks decide to fight against the Empire to save the trees....

In the original script the world of Endor was taken over completely by the Empire, destroying all the natural environments for their cities (basically an early version of Courisant). All native life forms were exiled to the moon.
In fact, Palps still refers to it as a "sanctuary moon" in the film.
Google search for the concept art of the scrapped city planet. It's freaking awesome!

Another features a really cool city scape that looks Couresant.

I wonder how how it would've looked in RotJ if they used it...

I'm thinking it would look like a cross between Los Angeles in Blade Runner and Cloud City I'm also curious about what kind of score John Williams would make for it. All the music for Cloud City is beautiful
