Italian film director, screenwriter, and actor Ruggero Deodato has left us at the age of 83, on December 29th. His career spanned a wide-range of genres including peplum, comedy, drama, poliziottesco, and science fiction, yet he is perhaps best known for directing violent and gory horror films with strong elements of realism. His most notable film is Cannibal Holocaust 1980, considered one of the most controversial and brutal in the history of cinema, which was seized, banned or heavily censored in many countries, and which contained special effects so realistic that they led to him being arrested on suspicion of murder. It is also cited as a precursor of found footage films such as The Blair Witch Project and The Last Broadcast. Other movies include Hercules, Prisoner of Evil 1964, Phenomenal and the Treasure of Tutankhamen 1968, Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man 1976, Concorde Affaire '79 1979, The House on the Edge of the Park 1980, Raiders of Atlantis 1983, The Barbarians 1987, Phantom of Death 1988 and The Washing Machine 1993. Thanks for remembering filmmaker Ruggero Deodato. A great director, highly influential, a pioneer of cinema.
{ # Without wishing to make any particular points, I feel I should probably address that many people will be aware that Deodato became a symbol of the cruelty against animals shot on camera following controversy around the release of 'Cannibal Holocaust' (1980). Animals have been killed on screen pretty much since the dawn of film, though I believe things have improved markedly this century (CGI may have helped), based upon what I've read about changing laws and industry standards. I can think of many prominent directors who could / would / should be called in to question over the treatment (or killing) of animals on screen, a number of whom were active at this time, yet I honestly don't see it done like it is with Deodato. I strongly recommend the recent essay 'Chicken Decapitation And Battered Cats : Hollywood’s History Of Animal Cruelty' by Anne Billson, published at 'The Guardian', which outlines in a nutshell why some people will never watch certain films; classical westerns, for example. For me, 'Cannibal Holocaust' highlights just how cruel this world is, it's not an easy watch, and I hope it inspires people to do more to protect animals and their natural environment; Deodato made other movies too though, as is the case with pretty much all the European directors I know of who made films in the 'cannibale' subgenre.
On the day of Ruggero Deodato's passing, we also saw reports of the death of the great Russian composer Eduard Artemyev. I love Artemyev's music composed for films directed by Andrei Tarkovsky in the 1970s - but, remember the mistreatment and killings of animals in Tarkovsky's historical drama 'Andrei Rublev' (1966)? I do ... }
Thanks for the movies, Mr. Deodato ...
Filmmakers Juraj Herz, Neil Marshall, Sean Cunningham, Nicolas Winding Refn, Takashi Shimizu and Stuart Gordon with Ruggero Deodato and Jesus Franco ...

Thanks for remembering cinematographer Blasco Giurato. He'll rightly be remembered for his work with filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore but he collaborated with many fine Italian directors during his career in cinema.
Thanks for the movies.

Final thoughts 2022.
The first year without a horrible pandemic, many of us survived, and many we lost.
Let's remember all we lost in a positive way no matter what religion, they gave us hope, thrills, adventure and a little horror, and that is cinema at it's best!

He was known for his scripts, River's Edge and The Waterdance, the latter based upon his own life experience after a spinal injury from a fall at the age of 24 kept him in a wheel chair for the remainder of his life. Daisy Gerber was the first female member of the DGA Training Program when it began in the mid-1960s. She then became one of the first female assistant directors working in Hollywood. She passed away on April 3, 2022 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 84. An assistant director and production manager, her credits include Bullitt (1968), The Killing of Sister George (1968), Annie Hall (1977), What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice? (1969), Scissors (1991), and many TV movies and series. Sadly, I'm unable to find an obituary for her, but this Director's Guild Magazine article says a great deal about her talent and her work back in the day when she was a forerunner among all women who wanted to work behind the camera. Her stories are interesting, and they convey both her dedication and her sense of humor. DGA Quarterly MagazineDaisy Gerber 1937-2022Rest in peace, dear Daisy. Thanks for the memories.
