I finally saw this piece yesterday afternoon in a packed cinema (it was a bank holiday in the U.S. & A) and yeah, it was totally amazing, charming, and all that. I'm seriously considering seeing this again in the cinema soon.
For me, the hype turned out to be totally justified. I personally think that most guys that don't dig this joint are just jealous of Seb. The film also illustrated this true (albeit minor) point in life -- namely, that one doesn't have to be wealthy, or even have a steady income, or have your act together to be able to attract women. Especially when you are young. Not that such had much to do with the actual point of the film; but you can put that piece of advice in the bank, Daddy-O.
So like I rate it a 9/10 and La La Land is now my top film of 2016. Not that I've seen a lot. My top 3 films of 2016 now are:
La La Land Silence The Neon Demon.
PS: Now how awesome would The Neon Demon have been if it had Ryan Gosling in it? Totally mind-blowing is what!

Have to go see it. We've been wanting to for weeks, but haven't gotten around to it. Can't this weekend. Possibly the next.

Yes! I'm pretty sure you're love it. It's a quite special and magical film! I personally think that anyone who was a young adult and dating in the 1980's would feel especially touched by it, but that's just me.

I gave it a 4 out of 10--The 4 points were for the opening scene and the general cinematography--but the songs were all lame, which is a slight problem in a musical!--Gosling can't sing and can barely dance--The story dragged on, and Seb's myopic view of what Jazz really is, is laughable--Its like saying Elvis was the only true rock and roller, and there was no good music after 1963--Pathetic

I really enjoyed it too and also rated it 9/10, but I don't think it is the best film of 2016. Moonlight and Manchester By the Sea are better films. La La Land will win several Oscars, including picture and director, but I don't think it deserves it.

4/10--As a modern Jazz fan, Seb's disdain for the Electric Piano is childish, most Jazz fans see that the electric piano has been an integral part of Jazz for the last 45 years!---Even the most traditional Jazz of today, like Candy Dulfer's Stasbourg St Denis, with its heavy use of horns, still has an electric piano as its basic beat-- 1.68 million views on YouTube. Cinematography was impressive, as well as the first scene, nothing wrong with imagination and exuberance--but the movie dragged and the songs were lame

I would much have rather seen Gosling and Stone dance to some good songs, like Swing Out Sister's upbeat jazzy song "Caipirinha"(1992), a happy song, a classic 1960's throwback tune but with 1990's instrumentation

or even have them dancing to a more modern happy Jazz song like Lyle Mays' Feet First(1988)

I think a lot of people are missing the point of the Seb character. He was atavistic in his view of Jazz just like this film was such a throwback to old Hollywood.

I really enjoyed the film. I had to see it when a friend rated it a 6/5. I rated it 9/10 on IMDB myself.
