The hype around it was incredible. They were saying old men in the mountains of India knew who DiCaprio was. People in China watching it all day.
I feel that it was right around the time of WTO loosening on trade and culture and Titanic was in the front line of that globalization. There was a heated debate on geek movie newsgroups about whether it was as significant a cultural phenomenon as Star Wars--but time has settled that. Titanic rarely gets talked about or quoted. If only they had an Ackbar, immortal fame ensured.

I hated it. Thoroughly unconvincing plot - there is no way a young upper class girl in those days would be allowed to run around the ship unchaperoned, still less go anywhere near third class. Rose and Jack both very annoying characters. Far too sentimental. Villain so absurdly villainous he was a caricature - if they hadn't been on a ship he'd have been tying Rose to the railway lines. Some of that was sort of the point though. It's a mega budget version of the melodramas of old. can't be helped, I hated all the characters! especially jack and rose. if they wanted to make an unrealisitc melodrama, why set it on a real ship. I would have thought the sinking of the titanic was dramatic enough without all that

I can admire the film for it's special effects and costumes and some of it's cast, (Kathy Bates!!) Even a stirring version of "Come Josephine". It's just a very short sighted movie to me. As if Jack and Rose are the only important characters... Puh-lease! I didn't care about their cheesy and unbelievable fast romance.
In fact I prefer the 1996 made for TV movie and the semi recent miniseries from 2012. They may not have high budgets but it focuses on several different characters. They are more interesting to me. I would even pick "A night to remember" over "Titanic".

I would welcome 10 movies like "Titanic" (1997) over 10 new Comic Book Blockbusters.
At least it is grand in scale, epic, well directed, well made use of CGi blended with realism, great acting, and it's ambitious as hell. It doesn't play it safe.
I don't find the love story overly sappy, it's a modern twist on Romeo + Juliet, but on the Titanic.
That's what people miss about this film. James Cameron tried to used a Greek Tragedy style romance (Shakespearean Tragedy) and blend it with a real American tragedy (Sinking of the Titanic) and ran them parallel to blend the emotions. I thought it was a brilliant idea.

I've been fascinated by the Titanic since the mid-60s and while I enjoyed the visuals of the ship and unfolding disaster, I found the love story saccharine and trivial. By the by, Ted Kennedy sat behind me in the theater.

By the by, Ted Kennedy sat behind me in the theater. "What a movie, Senator. I really liked when he saves the girl from drowning. Don't you?"

I enjoyed it, it was worth the money, I was intrigued by the romantic drama, and from a technical standpoint it was a magnificent achievement. But man, I really got sick and tired of hearing about it all the time back in '97.
