It has been 15 years or so since I watched this but I do remember disliking Bava's sense of humor a lot. Five Dolls for an August Moon was another with similar playful morbidness or whatever I should call it.
Maybe I should give these another chance. It has been a while.

My favorite Bava film.
Certainly one of my favorite horror premises, where it's pretty much open season on all the characters.
