It's true. There's a reason many games are classics and still being played. I'm not saying all of them are better. But some definitely are.

Exactly, because better graphics make it aa better game? Better music makes it a better game also? Maybe in terms of castlevania I see your point but not much else.

In some ways some of the older games are better as better graphics does not always translate into a better game. in terms of NES games i always liked "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out" which you can use a XBox360 controller on your computer and play it with the RetroArch emulator (i.e. www.retroarch.com/ ). i been playing that a little bit lately. but with that said... there are some games i still praise due to nostalgia, like GoldenEye on N64, but in all honesty that game was better from memory than it actually is today. but there are still some games that i liked many years ago that i still like today. p.s. in terms of my #1 video game EXPERIENCE... Mafia (2002) (on PC) as that was definitely the overall peak for me in terms of the overall feeling it gave me.

Catman is happy to finally get Anachronox running on his Windows 10 machine. I, meanwhile, beat Contra on NES this morning. (With the Konami Code on, but still!)

I think nostalgia does blind some people. It's like today not all games are going to be good.
Games from the past were certainly harder. The only way to stretch out a game's lifespan back then was make them hard to beat.

The thing with early games is that developers had extremely limited tools, so they had to be very creative. You'd be surprised at the depth of the early Zelda games, or games like Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy for the NES. There were strategy games, like Romance of the Three Kingdoms, that you could play for an entire day with your buddies, or games like Archon with practically unlimited replay value.
Although not an NES game, Age of Empires II is still the best pre-modern RTS game, which is why tens of thousands of people still play it on Steam...and that game came out in 1999.
Then there were games like F Zero, Star Fox and Drakkhen, all for SNES, that revolutionized gaming and were the precursors to some of the most popular game genres today.

Too many newer games are too easy. The NES had more challenge.

Should i care about this ? It's interesting how much some older titles that are terrible games are being sold for so much money. I myself bought Urban Champion for The NES with it's original box for $50 and it's a terrible game I didn't buy it for nostalgia. I just thought having a game that old with the box would be great to add to my collection. I wouldn't drop the kinda cash RGT 85 did to get a game.

There are some collectors who absolutely have to own every single title released for a system in every territory, which can get pretty expensive when they're chasing that last handful of ultra-rare titles. The quality of the games themselves is irrelevant to them, they just want the set, so they can seal them in plastic and display them on shelves in neat rows (which I've always found weird; it's like having a garage full of classic cars that you never drive). It just so happens that, on a lot of systems, the rarest games also tend to be some of the worst, in that they were critically panned, sold badly and ended up in landfill, hence they become "rare". The most popular games on a system are, generally speaking, also the easiest to find. I collect games for a number of systems going all the way back to the Commodore 64, but for me it's about the quality of the games, rather than the rarity. I won't buy a game I wouldn't play. If it's a rare game that I also want to play, I'll happily shell out for it.

Well, I'm not going to buy a Transformer if I can't transform it.

I liked NES Chiller, Phantom Fighter, Master Blaster, and a few others. What I still like about the old games were they were pretty challenging. I liked a lot of the old games like Bionic Commander for how hard they were, and you had to problem solve some stuff. In those days it was call a number for help or figure it out. I miss hanging out with a group of friends or family playing video games. Gaming online just doesn't come close to hanging with friends and smacking the controllers out of each others hands.
