While it's my #13 all time, it's safe to say it took a couple viewings + the dvd commentary to fully immerse myself in its greatness. It's a lane change from the Dollars trilogy for Leone, movies I was accustomed to. It's also a bit of a 'greatest hits' for the genre to its time, which took me the couple viewings to appreciate on a different level.
Some ppl miss Eastwood here - who turned the lead role down. As it was Bronson who turned down Leone's first offer for Fistful of Dollars, I say there's a bit of full circle come around for the best here. Eastwood was the icon as Blondie; Bronson's shadowy depths work perfectly for Harmonica among the busier ensemble here. I'm glad also that a supposed idea (rumour) of Eastwood, Van Cleef, & Wallach being shot dead at the opening train station never happened. While perhaps symbolic from the director at the time, that may have seemed too much of a ploy over time.
Fonda & the finale payoff flashback take this film to another level.

6/10 - Decent movie. I usually love Sergio Leone films, but a couple of things kept me from loving this one. It's just a tad too slow and a tad too long, even for an old-school movie lover like me. They could have cut up to an hour of this movie without losing much, in my opinion. Also, although Charles Bronson did a solid job, he simply doesn't have the charisma of Clint Eastwood (who unfortunately turned down the role). It's still a decent movie, but I just didn't love it as much as most did.

6/10 Bronson is great but it really is way too slow for my taste. Its a film I can respect but not enjoy so much.

An 8 for me. It is a slow movie, and I did not like it the first time I saw it, but I was only seven or so. Later on, I appreciated that slow pace a lot more.

9/10. Much like the OP, it took me a few viewings to truly appreciate it. It's my 3rd favorite western of all time, only behind The Good the Bad and the Ugly and For A Few Dollars More. Those ranks fluctuate for me a lot, though.

9/10 The visuals at the depot at the beginning are absolutely the best I have seen in a Western.

7/10 – many memorable scenes (the trains station, the Fonda-Bronson showdown), but all in all rather plodding. No mention of this young lady yet?

10/10 just for the opening scene alone.
Top 5 Western for me.
