Not represented: Peter Glenville
I should have included Peter Glenville in the poll. If we exclude directors like Charles Laughton, who only directed one movie, and those with at most three or four films, he has the highest average quality for his movies. He only directed eight, as most of his energies were devoted to being a very successful theater director in both London and New York. I have seen seven of his films and they were all good or very good. The one I have not seen is his version of Feydeau's Hotel Paradiso (1966) starring Alec Guinness and Gina Lollobrigida. French farce is not my cup of tea. Those I have seen were: -- The Prisoner (1955) Catholic propaganda, but very good, with Alec Guinness and Jack Hawkins. -- Me and the Colonel (1958) the only movie in which I like Danny Kaye -- Summer and Smoke (1961) a version of the Tennessee Williams play. Geraldine Page and Una Merkel received Oscar nominations yet this film seems to have disappeared from our collective memories. I never see it mentioned. -- Term of Trial (1971) starring Laurence Olivier -- Becket (1964) with Burton, O'Toole and Gielgud -- The Comedians (1967) a particular favorite of mine, with Burton, Taylor, Guinness and Ustinov.
