HERBIE GOES TO MONTE CARLO is a slight improvement because it actually is about car racing, and also because of a few funny moments... but it’s still not good. Even though the 2nd installment sucked, at least it explained why HERBIE had new owners. Here, there's no explanation as to why he’s back with JIM (his 1st owner) or what happened to CAROLE (JIM's girlfriend) and TENNESSEE (JIM's best friend). In the 1st installment, I had doubts about whether HERBIE had an actual personality or not, which prevented me from buying the emotional connection the humans develop with him. The 1st sequel showed that he's able to have dreams. This 2nd sequel makes him even more anthropomorphic. That would’ve been fine, except that script writers Arthur Alsberg and Don Nelson do the same thing with a Lascia he falls in love with. So it’s not just the VW’s?! All cars in this movie are alive?!
