I have contributed to this discussion before you showed up with your 'we as a society' rant. the only people who feel the way you do are like the people of the show... secretly trying to excuse their poor choices and allowing your itches to be scratched.
do you know how many people have had a bad upbringing including sexual abuse growing up? in the 80's and 90's the only thing that was against the law in terms of child rearing was physical abuse. and even then, the authorities were still wet behind the ears when it came to how to handle it. now there is psychological, mental, emotional, and neglect. so now, of course everyone is going to have some sort of addiction.

That's exactly the point. What was considered "acceptable" behaviour back then is turning up in all sorts of medical and physical issues that need treatment. No one is trying to alleviate responsibility, but there's also the proof that people were irreversibly damaged through abuse and/or neglect, and now they have to pick up the pieces as best they can.
Telling someone to just suck it up, get over it, or it happened to you and so what, only serves yourself. This is a real problem. Maybe it didn't touch your life, or your body.
We learn different coping techniques. And new ones need to be learned. You can't just sandblast this mentality into people. Like that's going to work...

Oh my God, did anybody see tonight's episode? 2 brothers, 600 and 800 pounds, the 600 pound younger brother has a mentality of about 8, the oldest brother has the mentality of a 3 year old on crack. How did they do it? How did they find somebody worse than all the other patients combined? And to top it all off, this was just part 1, we see the conclusion NEXT week.

We learn different coping techniques. And new ones need to be learned. You can't just sandblast this mentality into people. Like that's going to work... Trying to reason with people who refuse to educate themselves on the topic at hand just ends in you wishing you could slam your head against a wall until you black out. People prefer to stay ignorant and cruel, and the internet provides an outlet for it. Equating a 600 pound person's eating habits as a simple summation of bad choices is like saying an alcoholic's liver cirrhosis is because they stayed out at the bar too late one night. You can't discuss quantum physics with people who don't understand basic algebra, and you can't discuss eating disorders with people who don't understand simple psychology. That said, both of your posts are completely on point, and I'm so glad that there are at least a few people who understand these matters. There is hope on the horizon. Binge eating disorder is finally being recognized as a real thing, and has been added to the DSM. The general public needs more education on the eating disorder spectrum. Of course, some people will still choose to be an a!@hole, but that is more a reflection on them than anything else. You can't argue with science, and you can't argue with an a!@hole. Fortunately, science wins

Tonight's episode was definitely...interesting to say the least. By far Steven has been THE worst of the worst of the worst of the worst, very smart therapist he has, bring the dad in and talk to him directly, convince the dad to finally man up and stop giving into his demands. And very smart of Dr. Nowzaradan, get all his prescription records together and make him face it. To be honest though, when he said 'come down the hall, I want you to see something', I wasn't expecting a mirror, I was expecting another patient like him who had died.
It'll be very interesting to see where these two are in a year.

Have you seen the "NEW" Lupe? She is leaving Gilbert. I saw that last night, GOOD for her, he's a weird prick. And also great to see the progress she's made, I really never thought she'd actually get anywhere after her episode last year, especially on her own volition.

@marilynluvstigger I was thinking, based on some of the other posts you made (I just can't recall if maybe you made them in the fitness forum?) ...but have you heard of groups called "anamia"? Do you know what they are?
EDIT: It might be spelled "anomia" actually

They have a lot of good insight, and just based on some of the things you wrote, I think you may find some of these folks to be less critical and judgmental of some of the things you're going through. They're not about trying to "fix" things or lecture or debate, but they give a lot of support, help and encouragement, but not in any type of demeaning fashion. If you're ok with it, and if you do check them out (yt has some good groups), let me know what you think. Be well....

I have no idea why people would have any interest in these people. The stench must be simply overwhelming.

I guess if you don't post for a little while you become a "deleted member". Sheesh! Waiting for the new season. I think I've seen just about all of them now. All the excuses and "not snacking" and "I know my body better than Dr. Now" and "But I stuck with the diet" and "Mom....I had an accident" (that one was disgusting!!!!). I have a prediction for the new season. They'll be big. They'll be full of excuses. Most of them will have been molested (and no, I'm not making light of that). Most of them will be shown showering at the beginning of the episode. Most of them will whine and cry. Most of them will eat in one day what would last the rest of us at least a week. And, of course, most of them will think the know better. At least once in a while you get someone that actually listens and puts in the effort. Later, gator! Fast Food Giant Turkey Legs! Made you look.
