THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA - 1973 - Superior to AD 72 in most ways, with a plot that manages to merge science fiction with supernatural horror without negating the latter (since most often, if something supernatural is working alongside science fiction, then the SF is used to explain the supernatural as something based in science--which is not the case here). I don't watch this one often but it is a decent ending for the Hammer ones (if we ignore Seven Golden Vampires).

5/10Four teens awaken a centuries old legend called The Pumpkin Man. He haunts them and does his best to kill them. Its a alright film. Nice Halloween atmosphere. Not great but very watchable. Like a R rated episode of Goosebumps.

Vampires vs Zombies (2004) aka Carmilla, the Lesbian Vampire. Well, there are Zombies, and some women who sometimes act like Vampires but have no trouble walking around in the daylight, and the plot doesn't make a lot of sense, with some folks acting as if there wasn't a Zombie outbreak going on, BUT there is some nudity, lots of blood, and even a little lesbian action to make it somewhat watchable. 3½/10.

I met the director of that. He had sold the film to the Asylum and told me that he had to sign a contract that let them alter it--and he was worried they would ruin it. Then he smiled and said "but then I thought, they want to make money--they won't ruin it!" He was later upset because they changed the name--it was Carmilla originally and people thought he had come up with V vs Z to trick people into thinking the film was something else. He was enthusiastic.
OPEN SEASON - 1974 -- surprisingly obscure thriller with Peter Fonda and William Holden. It really keeps you gripped thanks to the slow unraveling of the story and very good performances about three sadistic buddies who kidnap strangers for fun and games. Never has had a dvd release apparently.

Don't Answer The Phone! (1980)A Vietnam veteran who works as a porno photogragher kills women. He also stalks a popular psychologist-radio host. This is the first time ever I've watched this, as it's been a difficult movie to find throughout the years. Turns out it was a lackluster contribution to the misogyny/slasher sub-genre of horror. Not that I had high hopes in the first place. It follows a similar pattern as Maniac (1980) in that we know who the killer is, we see his day-to-day life, and learn of his parental issues of the past. But unlike Maniac, this one is surprisingly tame in comparison. Director Robert Hammer lacks the talent in creating an atmosphere of dread and true horror, and even his attempts at goofy humor falls completely flat. Aside from the pedestrian direction, much of the acting is terrible. However, Nicholas Worth as the killer did put some effort to make the character as creepy and disgusting as possible, so he ended up doing a competent job. Worth is probably best known as Pauly in Darkman. 2/10

City of the Vampires (1993) Kind of a loose, low budget interpretation of I Am Legend(one of the Vampire Hunters is named Matheson). A rather lost looking guy wanders around a city that has been mostly taken over by vampires looking for his missing GF. The acting is amateurish, the directing is poor, and worse, it's mostly boring. 2/10.

1/10Wow. This really is one of the worst things I have watched ever. This film is a complete eyesore and thats being easy on it. The film is about a guy who thinks he has fleas. Kinda like the William Friedkin film Bug but I liked that film. So he picks at himself. And thats the whole movie. Except for one scene that shows the guy on the toilet taking number 2. Yeah...I really needed to see that. This is grade Z trash at its worst.

3/10Barbra Crampton stars in this snowy horror flick that starts out rather well. It has a nice set up that reminded me of the Shinning. But as the film goes on we are introduced to a guy named Ed. He turns the the film from a horror film to a odd comedy and ruins the film. Bummer. This may be one of the only modern horror/slasher films I see where no one is killed in it.

4/10And thus a slasher film with the Grinch was made. Its a concept film where the concept seems kinda cool to me but the film does not match the quality I hoped for. Granted it is a better film than the Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey. I admit I found some cleverness in it (like how one guy is named Dr.Zuess) and the make up is good. However they should have had the Grinch talk. Bummer he was silent. Overall its watchable but thats about it.

Festival of the Living Dead (2024) At a music festival commemorating a previous Zombie outbreak another outbreak occurs, resulting in some serious mayhem. A nice idea hampered by the fact that a lot of the zombie violence occurs in the dark, cutting down(but not out) on the blood and gore factor. Still, I enjoyed it well enough. Ashley Moore looks good as the main girl and Camren Bicondova(Selina Kyle on Gotham) is her best friend. 5/10.

I remember renting that from Blockbuster as a teen. I was extremity disappointed. I felt sorry for the guy because he was so enthusiastic about making movies (like Ed Wood really) and it wasn't his doing that they changed the name. Ok maybe it is a terrible adaptation of LeFanu but a lot of people seemed to rent it expecting something different in plot. And when he sold it to the Asylum, the mockbuster had not happened yet so the Asylum had a somewhat better reputation.
It's a shame that no company exists that tries to emulate AIP in its glory days. Blumhouse doesn't really. I have heard that the Asylum owners consider it a badge of honor if they can make a movie that people laugh at--and not even Arkoff had such low aspirations.

The Devil's Honey(1986) A thriller with elements of horror and lots of sex and nudity by Lucio Fulci. An unstable woman kidnaps a doctor she holds responsible for her BF's death and subjects him to various mental and physical tortures. 7/10.

The Survivor (1981)A passenger airplane crashes in a field on the outskirts of a small town. Everyone on board is killed except the pilot, who somehow managed to just walk away from the crash with hardly any injuries. An average adaptation of a good James Herbert novel. Great production values and nice cinematography are overshadowed by a confusing script and painfully slow direction by David Hemmings. Fans of the novel will likely be disappointed by certain changes to the story, especially with the Goswell evil spirit subplot being eliminated. Herbert himself had expressed dissatisfaction with the movie version, and rightfully so. 5/10

Talk to Me (2022). A group of Australian teens have a mummified hand of a medium which allows them to see and communicate with the dead. They find this great fun, but not for long. Well acted and shot, and genuinely creepy. 7½/10.

1/10They Turned Us Into Killers is a total mess of a film. Its stars Scout Taylor-Compton, Taryn Manning and Lauren Francesca. The films says it says Kane Hodder and Michael Berryman. Kane Hodder is not in the film despite being third billed. The film uses footage from another film called Room 9 which this is a sequel to. Michael Berryman is not in the film at all. There is a picture of him and thats it. The film is about a young woman played by Scout Taylor-Compton who is getting revenge on a few guys who she blames for the death of her best friend. Its a really boring film thats a real chore to sit through. Bummer because I thought this was actually going to be good. Its one of the my least favorite films of the year so far.

5/10Scream Legacy is a fan film that debuted on Youtube. With fan films they can be a major plus since many are done with passion and love for the material they are based on. In this case the Scream series. Legacy is a alright film. I was not blown away by it but its better than a lot of major horror films I seen. Its about Katie Palmer who is the daughter of Sydney Prescott, being stalked by a new killer in a Ghostface mask. Scream Legacy is pretty average. Its not great, its not bad. Its watchable.
