Happy Birthday to my favorite actor, James Cagney! Many happy retoins, ya mug! ❤🥳
Cagney was reportedly so annoyed by the scene-stealing of a particular performer in a film that he vowed never to appear with the performer again. Who was the performer?

Horst Bucholtz - One Two, Three
Cagney was supposedly so annoyed by HB's upstaging attempts he allegedly told Billy Wilder to get HB in line or he would "knock Bucholtz on his ass".

Although he loathed Bucholtz, this was Cagney's final film, anyway. There was another actor who appeared with him years earlier, who specialized in character roles.

Wasn't RAGTIME in 1981 Cagney's final theatrical feature film appearance ?

Wasn't RAGTIME in 1981 Cagney's final theatrical feature film appearance ? Whoops...yeah. So, to rephrase: One, Two, Three was intended to be Cagney's last film before he retired to his farm, with no desire to ever make another film. So vowing to never again work with a specific actor wouldn't have meant so much.

So are we still seeking the identity of that scene-stealing Performer in the earlier Cagney filmography ?

Was it Jean Harlow in THE PUBLIC ENEMY? No, and this actor would never be mistaken for Jean Harlow, either.

Jack Lemmon in Mister Roberts?

Jack Lemmon in Mister Roberts? NTA; actually, Cagney enjoyed working with Lemmon, especially in the scene in which the Captain first meets Pulver (who's successfully hidden from him for over a year). Cagney had trouble keeping a straight face in that scene.

Cagney outdid Lemmon in Mister Roberts. I thought Cagney should have got Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The scene where he battles Fonda for liberty for the crew is amazing. And when the natives come on boards ship and he screams "GET THOSE CANNIBALS OFF MY SHIP".

Orson Welles said Cagney was the biggest star. He said when Cagney performed, he performed to the world.
I am not a Cagney fan--I did love Yankee Doodle Dandy and thought he was really good in the Chaney biopic but I prefer Bogart and Robinson as the gangster stars go. But I haven't see Cagney's most famous roles to be honest.
The grape fruit in the face scene have yet to experience.

When I was a kid, in the pre-home video era, I recorded Cagney's tirades from this movie on audio cassette and enjoyed listening to them over and over (okay, so I was a weird kid). I especially enjoyed his "Allllll right...whooooo did it? Whooooo DID IT?" bit.

I especially enjoyed his "Allllll right...whooooo did it? Whooooo DID IT?" bit. I used to use that particular line when my daughter misbehaved. Silly really, she was an only child but I was channeling my inner Cagney. It was hilarious when she first seen Mister Roberts and caught on, "That's where you got that line!'
And I loved the look that Cagney got on his face at the end when Lemmon bangs on his door loudly and informs him about the palm tree and "Now what all this crud about no movie?". You didn't need to see a subtitle saying "Oh no, not again".
