No this is Chazelle's award. It's a shame, he's the best IMHO.

No, Chazelle is definitely the front runner and if anyone pulls a surprise win, I think it would be Barry Jenkins for Moonlight. That would be a long shot though.

I don't think he'd win even without the comments he's made seeing as he already has 2 so to win another he's gotta have to pull off something amazing to get another. Him being nominated again though kinda shows Hollywood is ready to accept him again.

Im glad because we all make mistakes. The fact that he said he took time off to be a better person, we should give him the benefit of the doubt. Not it to mention, in Hollywood today we need all the talented directors we can get. There's too much trash out there.

Gibson has a chance, but I think it's Damien's award. He deserves it, especially as Whiplash was snubbed in 2015.

Mel is a despicable drunk, but perhaps the greatest director ever. Hacksaw Ridge was fantastic.

Mel's success begs the question....should awards bodies be wary of rewarding actors/actresses/directors/etc who are controversial/scandalous? I know many were upset when Polanski had awards success because of his legal troubles.

I know many were upset when Polanski had awards success because of his legal troubles. I believe the award should go to the best. I don't care about one's religious affiliation, sexual orientation, political views, personal problems, etc... The award for "Best Actor" or "Best Director" should go to the best. If they aren't arrested, in prison, and able to get work on a film, then they qualify for the award.

The person who did the best job should win the award, but I have a moral dilemma awarding someone like Roman Polanski who admitted to his crimes and is a fugitive of the law.

I am hoping Mel wins, but I highly doubt he will. As pointed out, he has already won before, and the way they treated him in Hollywood I'm amazed he even scored a nomination, no matter how good the average movie goer thought Hacksaw Ridge was.
Personally, I don't pay too much attention to what actors, directors etc do in their real/personal lives.... I judge them on how entertained I am by their performances or how moved I am by a movie overall.

Mel Gibson made ONE comment while drunk no less, and he was essentially blacklisted from Hollywood. Roman Polanski was accused of rape, and fled the country to avoid jail time, and yet he was eventually given an Academy award. Why didn't Hollywood separate the art from the person in Mel's case as they did in Roman's case?

Mel should win, but won't. But he's been welcomed back, and got recognition in a difficult and sensitive community. Great director, and a superb actor.

Exactly. it's like make some comments about certain things and they never forgive you, but if you rape a kid it's no big deal. just shows you how messed up those liberals in Hollywood are. but it makes you wonder if politics have anything to do with it as i imagine Gibson is a conservative (if he takes his religion seriously(which i imagine he does)) where as i imagine Polanski is probably not like most(probably vast majority) in Hollywood.

They (Hollywood) also continue to push Lena Dunham (totally disgusting person) and Amy Schumer (unlikeable, but not an outright awful person like Dunham) despite the fact that people really do not like them. I am not excusing or ignoring Mel's past, but you are absolutely correct.
