I can't get to sleep. At all. I guess I'll post another schedule. This is the TV schedule for New York City for Sunday 5 December 1954, per the edition of The Brooklyn Eagle for that date. I was tired when I copied the info, so I suspect I'll have made some mistakes (but yes, "Christopher Program" was indeed listed on several stations schedules). The schedule isn't too bad at all, it has some very entertaining series including "Toast of the Town", "What's My Line?", "General Electric Theater", "People are Funny" and others. Mind you it has its share of duds (witness WPIX's line-up of cheap crime dramas), but every schedule has its share of those. Generally speaking (based on the shows I've seen over the last few years) the schedule is pretty good. For those who are curious, yes, there are DuMont shows on this schedule, on their flagship station WABD, there are "Opera Cameos", "Rocky King, Detective" and "Life Begins at Eighty". The network was in sharp decline by this point, and the schedule would increasingly get cut, until the summer of 1955 where only a few shows remained, and after that summer the network only aired sports shows, until the very last DuMont telecast in August 1956 (a boxing match). Strictly speaking, WATV is defunct.....it has no real connection with the current channel 13. WCBS, Channel 2: 7:45AM - Prevues 7:55AM - Give Us this Day 8:00AM - What's Your Trouble? 8:15AM - Our Goodly Heritage 8:30AM - The Big Picture9:00AM - Film: Charlie Chan at the Wax Museum (1940) 10:00AM - Lamp Unto my Feet10:30AM - Look Up and Live11:00AM - Space Funnies 12:00PM - Winky Dink and You12:30PM - Contest Carnival 1:00PM - Film: The Big Cat (1949) 2:30PM - Face the Nation3:00PM - Now and Then 3:30PM - Adventure4:00PM - American Week 4:30PM - The Search 5:00PM - Omnibus6:30PM - You Are There7:00PM - Lassie7:30PM - Private Secretary8:00PM - Toast of the Town9:00PM - General Electric Theater9:30PM - Honestly, Celeste!10:00PM - Father Knows Best10:30PM - What's My Line?11:00PM - News 11:15PM - Film: The Steet Helmet (1951) 2:00PM - News 2:05PM - Give us This Day WRCA, Channel 4 8:00AM - In the Public Interest 8:30AM - The Fourth R 9:30AM - Sing a Song 10:00AM - Time for Adventure 10:30AM - Children's Hour 11:30AM - Hopalong Cassidy12:00PM - Captain Hartz and His Pets 12:15PM - Learn to Draw 12:30PM - American Inventory1:00PM - Youth Wants to Know1:30PM - Frontiers of Faith2:00PM - Princeton '54 2:30PM - Citizens Union Searchlight 3:00PM - NBC Television Opera Theatre4:00PM - Juvenile Jury4:30PM - Zoo Parade5:00PM - Hallmark Theater 5:30PM - March of Medicine Program 6:00PM - Meet the Press6:30PM - The Roy Rogers Show7:00PM - People are Funny7:30PM - Max Liebman Presents: Spotlight (1954) 9:00PM - Goodyear Playhouse10:00PM - The Loretta Young Show10:30PM - The Hunter11:00PM - News 11:10PM - Weather 11:15PM - Sports Final 11:20PM - The Igor Cassini Show (I assume this was a different series, with the same star, to the DuMont series) 12:00AM - Film: The Great John L. NOTE: This was previously on the Australian schedules thread. I am consolidating these threads. Wednesday 3 December 1958 TV schedule for Sydney, Australia. Television had only been in the city for slightly over 2 years. Schedule is extremely heavy on imported American series. Local drama consists of TV play "His Excellency", and the soap opera "Autumn Affair" (I saw four episodes of this a few years ago. It's not too bad. Happily a near complete run is held by the National Film and Sound Archives). Local content also includes various music/variety series, children's series, and "women's programmes". The entirely of the music TV series "Homeward Bound" was kinescoped onto film, but I have no idea if any episodes have survived. The TV play "His Excellency" was also kinescoped, but again I have no idea if it has survived. There were three stations to choose from, commercial stations ATN-7 and TCN-9, and non-commercial station ABN-2 (part of ABC). Sunday 18 January 1959 schedule for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. All four networks are represented: CBS, NBC, ABC, and NET. One of NET's shows on the schedule is "Appalachian Spring", an excellent presentation of dancing (it's on DVD). The shows are varied, and there's some great stuff on here (along with some obvious filler). CBS's prime-time line-up is amazing. I was quite tired when I put this together. Mistakes are likely. Chicago TV schedule for Saturday 3 April 1954. Some good shows, some bad shows, and plenty of b-movies! The reason I chose this date: today I watched the episode of "Your Hit Parade" on the schedule, which I very much enjoyed. Simple, carefree entertainment, the kind of thing the 1950s did very well. I wish they still did light-hearted yet tasteful shows like that. Everything on TV these days is way too serious and depressing! The city had four stations to choose from. One of them, WGN-TV, was a DuMont affiliate, although the only DuMont content on the schedule seems to be wrestling. I like this line-up of shows. You have sitcoms, anthology series, educational series, variety series, game shows (including some by my favourite game show producers, Goodson-Todman), and as mentioned above there are lots of b-movies (I love b-movies!). Tuesday 6 January 1959 TV schedule for Albuquerque, New Mexico. I choose this schedule partly because I hadn't done a 1950s schedule from Albuquerque yet, and also because all four networks are represented (NBC, CBS, ABC, and NET). The affiliate of NET has a schedule which includes a show called "Jazz Meets the Classics", which sounds interesting based on some accounts in old newspapers. The schedule is uneven...some of the best shows of the 1950s are on the schedule, as well as some of the worst (although, to be fair, the worst shows on the schedule are all in daytime. The prime-time line-up is quite good). Friday 24 September 1954 TV schedule for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Some of these shows are repeats, while some like "The Ray Bolger Show" and "The Life of Riley" were airing new episodes. It wasn't unusual in the 1950s for a show to begin its season in September, although some shows waited until October. Three stations to choose from: an NBC station, a CBS station, and a ABC/DuMont station (yes, Ernie Kovacs appears!). Some good shows and some bad shows (did they really need to show the awful "Ramar of the Jungle" twice? Wasn't once bad enough?). But overall a good schedule. Even the daytime line-up isn't too bad and includes several excellent series. Friday 13 September 1957 schedule for Melbourne, Australia. ABV-2 is a non-commercial station, while HSV-7 and GTV-9 are commercial stations. Source: The TV/Radio guide section in the 12 September 1957 edition of "The Age" newspaper, which provides a week of TV/radio listings. I copied the info very quickly, I may have made spelling mistakes and such. Interesting mix of American, Australian, British and Canadian series. A mix of genres: music/variety, documentary, anthology series, kiddie fare, westerns, sports, crime drama, and a game show. Quite a range of programs given the very limited broadcast hours. Australian television was only a year old at the time, but people were buying TV sets at a rapid rate. Baltimore, Maryland TV schedule for Tuesday 17 January 1950. Problem: Four networks, but the area only had three stations. Pretty good schedule based on what I've seen of it. If I had been a viewer in 1950, I would have watched "Kulka, Fran & Ollie" at 6:15PM, "Shadow Stumpers" at 7:00PM, "Texaco Star Theater" at 8:00PM, with a rather hard choice at 9:00PM (two different anthology series to choose from, plus a big band show). Sunday 16 December 1956 for Sydney, Australia. Television was only a couple months old in Sydney at the time, but already there were three stations. ABN-2 is non-commercial, the other two stations were commercial. You'll be happy to see that the underrated American sitcom "Our Miss Brooks" is on the schedule, as is Betty White's fun show "Life with Elizabeth". Locally produced shows on the schedule include direct telecasts and sports, plus the talk show "Books and Authors", game show "What's My Line" and of course news.
