Sunday 16 June 1957 TV schedule for Sydney, Australia. TV had been in the city for less than a year at the time. The schedule has American shows like "Fury" and "Life with Elizabeth" , British shows like "Fabian of Scotland Yard" and "The Buccaneers", as well as local shows like "Books and Authors" and "Music Room". There's also some local versions of overseas formats: "The Quiz Kids", "Meet the Press" and "What's My Line". The series "The Quiz Kids" was kinescoped in its entirety, and I wonder how many episodes survive. Well, I posted an Australian schedule earlier today, but I feel so excited about television that I'll post a second schedule today, this time from the United States. This schedule is for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for Monday 6 February 1950. Only one problem: Only one station! But when you have fine shows like "The Goldbergs", "Studio One" and "Kukla, Fran and Ollie", you only need one station. I find these single station schedules interesting....as four networks (NBC, CBS, DuMont and ABC) somehow get squeezed into one station. The result, usually, is a "best of the best" schedule, as seen here (though the notorious "Candid Camera" seems to be the exception to that!). WDTV, Channel 3 11:00AM - Test pattern 2:00PM - Shoppers' Matinee 4:00PM - Homemakers' Exchange 4:30PM - Test pattern 5:15PM - Concert Hall 5:30PM - Howdy Doody6:00PM - Western Film Serial 6:30PM - Lucky Pup6:45PM - Home is Happiness 7:00PM - Kukla, Fran & Ollie7:30PM - Pie Traynor 7:45PM - Pitt Parade 7:55PM - Viz Quiz 8:00PM - Chevrolet Tele-Theatre8:30PM - The Al Morgan Show9:00PM - Candid Camera9:30PM - The Goldbergs10:00PM - Studio One11:00PM - The Warren Hull Show11:15PM - Coming Attractions

So far today I've posted an Australian schedule and an American schedule, so how about Britain? Here's the UK TV schedule for Thursday 14 May 1953. Only one problem: Only one station! Yes, the BBC. What makes this schedule special is that something from it survives. "The Lady from the Sea", a live TV play, was performed twice, first on the 10th, and again on the 14th. This second performance was recorded via kinescope (known as telerecording in the UK). This recording survives. In general, very little UK TV programming survives from 1953. 3:15PM - About the Home4:00PM - Andy Pandy5:00PM - Children's Television (with: "Stories in Stamps", " Children's Newsreel", "Trains") 7:30PM - TV Play: The Lady from the Sea9:15PM - Interlude 9:20PM - BBC Television Newsreel9:35PM - Animal, Vegetable, Mineral?10:00PM - Summer Rhapsody 10:20PM - Our Concern is the Future 10:35PM - Weather Forecast and News (sound only)

I'm very bored. So far today I watched some TV, watched some silent films, listened to 70 songs, went for a walk, and uploaded a video to YouTube. I don't know what to do next. So, I'll post my fourth schedule for the day. But since earlier today I did Australia, USA, and England, that leaves us with...... Ottawa, Canada TV schedule for Saturday 6 June 1953! I don't post Canadian schedules very often, I admit. I should post more of them. Yes, there's only one problem: Only one station! But television in Ottawa was only a few months old at the time, which is a good excuse. ....and hey, they got Jackie Gleason, Hopalong Cassidy and some jazz. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT? CBOT, Channel 4 5:00PM - Hopalong Cassidy6:00PM - sign off 6:45PM - Uncle Chichimus ( which was later revived as this) 7:00PM - Tabloid7:30PM - Jazz with Jackson 8:00PM - The Jackie Gleason Show9:00PM - Telescope 9:30PM - Wrestling (direct from Chicago! Wonder which wrestling show this was....) 11:00PM - sign off

Still bored. Today I've posted schedules from USA, Australia, UK, and Canada......these are the only countries for which I have access to 1950s schedules, so..... Sunday 4 November 1956 TV schedule for Melbourne, Australia. The very first day of Melbourne television! Only a single station, HSV-7, though two more stations launched within a matter of weeks: ABV-2 and GTV-9 (however, although GTV-9 broadcast some live sports telecasts during 1956, it didn't launch full-time operations until 1957) HSV, Channel 7: 7:00PM - Official Opening 7:15PM - Variety Show 8:00PM - The Adventures of Robin Hood 8:30PM - I've Got a Secret (yes, a local version of the U.S. show) 9:00PM - Our Miss Brooks (perhaps one of the most important shows without a proper DVD release) 9:30PM - World News Round-Up 10:00PM - TV Window ("Previews of programmes" according to the Age newspaper) 10:15PM - News (with Eric Pearce, later to become Sir Eric Pearce, and Mary Parker) 10:30PM - station close So that's the first Melbourne TV schedule. It was a start. There is good taste in the imports, which must count for something.

Earlier today I posted a UK schedule, now I will post an Australian schedule. Saturday 21 November 1959 television schedule for Sydney, Australia. Lots of edited films....yet viewers loved watching them anyway. I sometimes get the feeling a lot of classic films stars would have been forgotten if it wasn't for TV exposure of their old films. Non-imported shows include various music/variety series ("Bandstand", "Six O'Clock Rock", "Rhythm Roundup", "The Saturday Show", etc.) I'm the last remaining person in the world who still refers to Australian TV stations by their call-signs. Earlier today I posted schedules from US, UK and Australia. In terms of English speaking countries with television services in the 1950s, that leaves us with*..... Lots of countries had TV in the 1950s, including France, West Germany, East Germany, Russia, Italy, Mexico, Sweden, Austria, Japan, and heck, even Thailand! I would love to post schedules from any of those nations, but wouldn't know where to find them... Surprisingly, Ireland and New Zealand didn't have TV in the 1950s. Yes, Thailand got TV before them. Think about that.

Tuesday 2 December 1958 schedule for Melbourne, Australia. A nice little schedule. A fun mix of shows. Useless fact: "Long John Silver" (7:00PM on ABV-2) was the first dramatic TV series from Australia, and actually predated the introduction of TV to that country by a couple years. Local variety was on the schedule, always a good thing. Several series on the schedule are very obscure American syndicated shows, some of which sound interesting. I realise these syndicated efforts were "cheap", but low-budget doesn't always mean bad.... London, England television schedule for Friday 26 December 1958. Note: The reason I post this schedule is because I just watched the episode of sitcom "The Larkins" that appears on it. Amusing. It's on DVD. P.S. although many shows on the schedule are lost, the episode of "Hancock's Half Hour" survives and is on DVD. Also on DVD is the period drama "Our Mutual Friend", but I haven't viewed this yet. I believe the TV play "Cinderella" survives but isn't available. "The Woodentops" also survives but isn't available. Many episodes survive of sitcom "The Army Game" and are on DVD, but I don't believe the episode from this date is among the surviving episodes.
