Received, 'The Paper Time Machine - Colouring The Past', as a Christmas gift. Some will find it abhorrent, though. Should black and white photographs be 'colorized'? It's like Ted Turner colorizing classic films. What are your thoughts? The first selfie Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge Dynasphere Times Square 1947

...Diane Arbus is another photog who came to mind. Based in NYC, she did some very interesting work. Her husband, Alan Arbus, frequently appeared in episodes of MASH. A movie was made about her which I believe featured Nicole Kidman in the main role. I think the movie was entitled "Fur"

Regarding colorizing B&W photos:
My father was a professional. In instances (during the 1930's and 1940's) when some of his customers wanted color, he would sepia tone the photo and apply oil paint to the image. Thre results were very often stunning!

That's meeting a demand, and delivering. I don't have a problem with colorizing, but some really do. I like how the photograph above of Times Square brings it more to life. It makes it more relatable. Have you seen, 'WW II in HD Color'? It's really interesting, and probably makes it more accessible to the younger generation. The film director, Peter Jackson, has just released a documentary, a couple of days ago called, 'They Shall Not Grow Old', digitizing, colorizing and converting to 3-D, WW I footage, also. However, if someone came up with the idea of colorizing 'Paths of Glory' by Stanley Kubrick, for example, I'd have some reservations.

"WWII in HD Color" is well known among myself and my veterans group. I am a Vietnam War era veteran and in my group currently, there are 4 active WWII members.

I'm in Berlin at the moment, and went to an interesting exhibition called, 'Double Take', by the Swiss artists Cortis and Sonderegger. They recreate famous photographs of the Twentieth Century by building dioramas, and then photographing the results, including the materials used in the creation. The premise doesn't sound very promising, but it was fascinating. They also took photographs of the whole process, that when strung together, in a 'slide show', looked like some demented stop animation, as they played with lighting, stops, materials, etc., to get the final result just right.
