Son of Rambow (2007): Two buddies pool their talents to make a sequel to Rambo: First Blood. The results are pretty impressive, considering that they're each about 12 years old.

Most recently there is the almost Best Picture winner, La La Land. I have not seen it and probably never will. Is anything shown of the film-making process?

Couple more Oscar winners and nominees: Paper Moon / Peter Bogdanovich (1973) The Jolson Story / Alfred E. Green (1946) Just curious, what part of Paper Moon is about making a movie?

How about Hard Core Logo-- a movie about a fictional documentary being made about a fictional band. Sounds like the description for This Is Spinal Tap so that too maybe. Not much in either that shows the process of filmmaking other than someone with a camera following the bands around. Never heard of it. Sounds interesting, Thanks.

I do not remember anything about film-making in either of those. Just saying someone is/was a famous film star does not qualify. However, as stated, my memory is sh1t these days so I am happy to be shouted down.

I meant to say "Nickelodeon" (1976). Both this and "Paper Moon" star Ryan O'Neal and are directed by Peter Bogdanovich. I will correct it in my original post.

Yes, the main character is a famous moviestar and the plot revolves around her life between real life and movie sets. Imo it certainly qualifies.

In the 2nd half of Notting Hill, after Will and Anna have a fight and seasons pass, Will learns Anna is back in town making a Henry James film. He goes and visits her on the set, where everyone is in period piece costumes. ...This would qualify as a movie scene about making movies.

Also, we see Will and Anna rehearse the script in one scene.

My Week With Marilyn
Mute Witness
I do not recall much of the second one because I found it so scary and have Only watched it once some 15 years ago, but in some scene they shot a porn- movie.

After putting my foot in it with Jillian, I am taking you guys on trust so I have listed it. I know Sandler plays a terminally ill film-star, but is there anything about film-making in this? Thanks for you extensive list of suggestions, moviebuffbrad.

RE: alphabetizing the list. IMDb does it incorrectly for some un-known reason. Basic ignoring of the "rules of lists"
Player, The not THE PLAYER.
ditto with The Artist (2011) Michel Hazanavicius The Aviator (2004) Martin Scorsese The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) Vincente Minnelli The Big Knife (1955) Robert Aldrich The Big Lebowski (1998) Ethan Coen, Joel Coen Film-making does not feature prominently. The Big Picture (1989) Christopher Guest Before Guest hit on his spoof documentary formula. The Carpetbaggers (1964) Edward Dmytryk The Fall (2006) Tarsem Singh Film-making does not feature prominently. The Girl (2012) Julian Jarrold About Hitchcock's relationship with Tippi Hedren. The Jolson Story (1946) Alfred E. Green The Last Tycoon (1976) Elia Kazan The Muse (1999) Albert Brooks The Stunt Man (1980) Richard Rush etc.
same with Titles: A Star is Born -- Star is Born, A.

There are clips of George's past films in the movie, as well as references to his films, but I don't recall any of the actual filmmaking process in the movie, but I could be wrong.

RE: alphabetizing the list. IMDb does it incorrectly for some un-known reason. Basic ignoring of the "rules of lists" Player, The not THE PLAYER. etc etcsame with Titles: A Star is Born -- Star is Born, A. I have been both a librarian and a university press proof-reader at various times so I have had to grapple with this problem in the past. Certainly for English language titles, where there are only three articles (the, a, an) and their use is consistent, your "rule of lists" is a better solution, to avoid a long list of titles beginning with "the". But when you have to incorporate foreign language titles, and especially those in non-European languages, it gets more complicated, requiring a knowledge of foreign languages which cataloguers are unlikely to possess. Maybe that is why IMDb took that decision. But for our purpose here, your system would have been better. I simply followed the IMDb system to save time when copying and pasting. I ain't gonna change it now.

Great work, guys and gals! 94 titles so far. It certainly consoles me for my "lost" list of 30 odd titles.
And we still await manfromplanetx's gleanings from the filmographies of Samoa and the Transnistrian Republic. Though the one title he did suggest is exactly what I was looking for: what are the springs of creativity in films?
I am less interested in the aspirations, sensitivities and insecurities of actors. They should stand in front of the camera and do what they are told. I sympathize with Hitchcock who said actors should be treated like cattle and with Aki Kaurismäki who said that if he ever caught any of his actors "acting" he would give them a smack in the mouth.
