Italian stylist Dario Argento's best movie is undoubtedly SUSPIRIA, released in 1977. The story of young American dancer, Susy Banyon, Suspiria raises the horror bar with its opening sequence--a murder that has to be seen to be believed. Actually, it's a double-murder!
I'd heard and read quite a bit about this film but didn't get to see it until Halloween of 1988, on VHS. I was not disappointed! So nice to see Hollywood great, Joan Bennett, in an important role as the head mistress of the dancing academy attended by Susy. Suspiria is violent, gory, beautifully filmed, and competently acted. It definitely has a European "feel," and Argento is not afraid to go for the throat--as he does in one harrowing Suspiria sequence involving a blind man's dog!
Any Argento fans here?

I really like Suspiria, though my favorite Argento is Tenebre.
The colors in Suspiria are wonderful, I even remember Tarantino using it as an example of how to use color in a movie to give it a distinctive feel. The scene with the blind man's dog is great, I love how creepy it starts and how gory it gets. I also love the scene with the bat, I remember getting squirmy when it gets squashed. AND that creepy blonde kid who was always around, he always freaks me out for some reason.

I love his movies. I really hope they don't go through w/ the remake of Suspiria...

Yes, the creepy blonde kid wearing a uniform, short pants and athletic socks! I thought the end was suitably creepy, too.

Love the over saturated technicolor style of it...
There should be a technicolor revival.

The arresting visuals and intrusive goblin score is what always sticks with me. That opening sequence is perfection. Although I'm in the camp that enjoys the beautiful, but frightening horror escapism of "Inferno" even more.

Apart from a few scenes like the barbed wire one this movie never did much for me. I have tried a few other Argentos like Tenebre and Phenomena but his style over substance is really not my kind of thing.

Is Inferno the movie that has a very weird sequence with a submerged room in a parking garage? Or is my memory faulty?

Thanks for posting that! But I remember a trailer where the title pulsed, and we saw a woman brushing her hair at a vanity table. She turns, and her face is a skull!

The best set-piece in the film. Everything about it plays out like a vivid nightmare.

I personally found it annoying and not particularly scary or tense. Actually, I found it kind of cheap.

"Suspiria" is my favorite Dario Argento film. I love the gloomy atmosphere, the shocking brutality, that incredible Goblin score, and Argentos' arresting use of color. Plus, the lovely Jessica Harper is an appealing heroine.

The Conjuring was very derivative, and you could see where it was all going the moment those people moved into the old house.

I guess this is our first horror movie disagreement. I feel like a newlywed who just found out my spouse likes cigars!
Just kidding.
