A very dissappointing year, or at least from the look of the films that I have seen, which is mostly of one or two great classic, then followed by a couple of good/enjoyable films, then the rest is just one big mash of mediocre, below average or just terrible movies.
The highlight is of course, The Big Lebowski. One of the funniest, most quotable and re-watchable films of the late 90s.
Jim Carrey decided that it was not enough to be the best paid actor or the biggest comedy act in the business, now he wanted to be taken seriously, and for the next few years he would star in several films with a big dose of drama and that screamed for an Oscar nominee, but for me, I think he never topped, The Truman Show.
The Farrelly brothers released their third comedy classic in a row, with the hilarious There's Something About Mary.
Where Batman & Robin might have failed, the animated Batman titles of the 90s, was always a great piece of work, and Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero is my second favorite animated Bat film, right behind The Mask of Phantasm (1993).
Other good or enjoyable titles, that did not make the top 10: Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Can't Hardly Wait, Antz, Bride of Chucky, Soldier, Taxi, Species II, Phantasm IV: Oblivion and B. Monkey.
The teen-sex comedies was about to make a big comeback, a year later with the American Pie franchise, but my favorite of the late 90s releases was Can't Hardly Wait, that was really funny, and took place at a big party where some poor love-struck fella tries his luck with the hottest girl at school (Jennifer Love Hewitt). The title, I think was a tribute to the classic 80s song by The Replacements. Anyway, there is a lot of great comedy in it, where Seth Green tries to act like a gangstah, but comes off as a complete fool. The geeks have this big plan of taking revenge on the schools biggest bully, only that sometimes, even the best plan might not succeed, and we also get one of the coolest movie version with great use of Paradise City by Guns 'n' Roses.
The Bad, there was a lot of it that year, Godzilla the movie I saw a the theatre and it was a big letdown. Unbearable leading characters, a horrible soundtrack, specially the godawful team up between Puff Daddy featuring Jimmy Page, and still it did not make my bottom 10 list.
In 1993 the french released the hilarious time-adventure slapstick comedy, The Visitors with Jean Reno in the lead, as a honourable knight in shining armour, that ends up in modern France, where he must try to find his one true love. Sadly, it earned so much money, that they tought the idea of a sequel (and later on even an american remake) was a brilliant idea. Turned out, they where both horrible. Not one funny line/scene, just a complete mess.
Lost in Space were supposed to be one of the big summer box office hits that year, but the only thing I remember beside it was bad, was the upbeat theme song done into a new version by Apollo 440.
