Retroactively turn the Brendan Fraser movies into a shared universe. Hell, they already have The Rock as part of it.
I'd love to see Rick O'Connell take on Dracula.

problem is those monsters are old school and outdated. They need modern monsters that the audience hates and enjoys being destroyed.
Like the unholy MCU trinity: weirdraptor, ararchStanton and formersamhmd. These are truly reviled and people would pay to see their butts kicked.
Work on it Universal.

With how badly received 'The Mummy' has been, on top of its less than spectacular domestic take, I think it's fair to say that the Dark Universe has an even bigger uphill battle than the DCEU did pre-'Wonder Woman'. With that being said, it doesn't seem likely that Universal is just going to cancel it altogether at this point. They seem to be far too invested in these movies to just stop after a single film. So the question is, what do they do? Personally, I think the biggest mistake with the Dark Universe so far has been trying to copy the Marvel formula far too closely. We don't need $100+ million PG-13 action films starring about Mummies or the Frankenstein Monster. If Universal wants to build a modern shared universe with these classic monsters, that's fine, but they need to do their own thing with it. Don't try to compete with Marvel. They need to go back to the horror roots for these monsters. That's my two cents anyway. Any other suggestions? Agree? Disagree? Their big mistake was to announce a cinematic universe in the first place. Marvel didn't do that - Iron Man was a pure standalone movie, with an Avengers hint in the post credit sequence. They built it gradually from there, and people were hungry for more. Look at the Cloverfield franchise for another example. They've never shoved the idea of a Cinematic universe into people's faces. Hell, for the first couple of movies the films were really nothing to do with one another, linked by a few minor points and the use of the world Cloverfield itself. And fans clamour to work out relationships between the films. They should never have announced the Dark Universe. Make the Mummy as a standalone movie, without any reference to other Universal stories except as tiny background stuff. Oh, and Tom Cruise was a bad mistake. For the future? I'd love to see a Creature from the Black Lagoon remake. Don't really care about the rest, to be honest.

I'd love to see a Creature from the Black Lagoon remake. Don't really care about the rest, to be honest. I hadn't thought of that, but you're right. These ones that are coming out saying, "This will be OUR shared-universe" keep having a lot of problems, but Marvel who threw IRON MAN into the world, then was like, "Oh, here's Captain America, he's cool, we think you'll like him.", and, "Oh, check out this Thor dude and his bro Loki, they were raised by Anthony Hopkins, we think you'll like them." And only after that did they go, "AVENGERS- that's right, a super-hero team up. You're gonna love it. And the more love you show for it, the more of them we'll make, cool? Awesome." It does seem like that starting from the "shared universe" point just makes it too great an undertaking for anyone to launch with. And yes, Tom Cruise was a terrible choice - for one, no one thinks of him with monster movies or shared universe, he's Maverick/the Mission Impossible guy/Show me the Money. And that's before he started telling them that he wanted more screen time, he wanted A, B, and C, blah blah blah. They needed to get someone with 1/50th the ego he's got on him, and tell them, "You are playing second-fiddle to our MUMMY. You are here to be a thorn in her side. You aren't the star." And, I honestly think they needed to play up more of the backstory for her in the trailers/promo material rather just being like, "Look, she was a hot chic and then she went mad, got too powerful, and they woke up a cursed mummy who will now wreck havoc on the earth." I'd love to see the INVISIBLE MAN and DR.JAKYLL/MR.HYDE movies they were planning. Mostly cause I have always been interested in the INVISIBLE MAN stuff- up to the LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMAN movie. Dr.Jakyll is also a really interesting character, and I am a huge fan of Russell C., so seeing him in the role would have been amazing.

What should Universal do with the 'Dark Universe'?
Stop being a bunch wimps and just release the next movie! If the next one is good it will remove the bad taste of the first one. If you have a plan you don't undo it just because of the first stumbling block! Sheesh!

What they should have do was to wait to see how The Mummy was going to do before planning a whole universe. ^^^THIS^^^
And actually, Dracula Untold was supposed to be the first real Dark Universe movie, but that didn't go the way they wanted either.
They should just release the movie as standalones.

Script, script, script. The Mummy's script was absolute trash, and it didn't help that Cruise was miscast.
Not sure what OP means by "go back to the monsters' roots?" Make smaller budget movies, less emphasize on action?
