I just got around to watching the infamous Arnold Schwarzenegger debut feature "Hercules in New York". Talk about a touching and heartfelt buddy film pairing Schwarzenegger up with the true star Arnold Stang.... actually, who am I kidding. I was bemused by it all. It's goofy, but was it intentional or not? But to my surprise the version I watched, was dubbed. That's Schwarzenegger. It was hilarious listening to this well mannered voice accompanying the actions of Schwarzenegger as he goes about flexing his muscles, showing up the naysayers, fighting a bear *Nice suit* and riding around in a chariot. This just added to the humorous nature of the dialogues and their delivery "You have struck Hercules"! Anyone seen both versions?

Hard to believe that 20 years later, he would become one of the biggest movie stars in the business. Love the film though. Goofy as hell, but in a hilarious way. So much going on, I have to watch it at least once or twice a year. "How dare you touch Hercules!" Already by then, Arnie made sure to give his fans a taste of what to come, with a real classic movie quote. People are still quoting that one, and that line is always a winner, well maybe not if you suddenly find yourself gotten into some heavy trouble with the cops that is.

Isn't it ridiculous how bad he acts? Incredible how he became a real superstar at the start of the '80s.

I'm still at a lost, to what was the meaning of it all. Intentional or not... it's comic genius. Schwarzenegger and Stang's interplay had me stitches. The quotes didn't really had the same affect on me, due to watching the dubbed version. Although after watching it, I checked out couple of the clips on youtube to hear what he sounded like. Classic stuff... terrible delivery, but only Arnie could get away with it.

But I have only seen the original though, and it always make laugh how badly delivered most of the lines from Arnie are. I think that some of the best and funniest "so-bad-its-good" titles are those that is the result of some freakish accident were everything that goes wrong, somehow work far better than it should. Nowadays, films like the Sharknando series are being treated as so-bad-its-good "cult-movies" and so on, but they really are just bad and trashy films, trying too hard to be goofy b-movies, but the best ones are those that actually at one point tried to start out being a "serious" work of "art" and instead ends up as one of the all time b-movie turkeys.

I wonder how Schwarzenegger feels about it? I know what you mean. I just watched for the first-time, the "Sharknado" films in the last fortnight. Ugh. No re-watch value. Give me the "The Last Shark" any-day.

"Now, when my kids get out of line, they're sent to their room and forced to watch Red Sonja ten times. I never have too much trouble with them." - Arnold I guess, if they have been real bad, then maybe Junior or Jingle Bells will scare them pretty good, and who knows, Hercules might have been thrown in there too.

The Last Shark eh? I have a scandinavian copy on DVD, and the funny thing is, on the front cover it says The Last Jaws, then on the back cover it is The Great White, then on the main DVD disc it says L'ultimo squalo. Seems like they couldn't decide which title to go with, so they just ended up with putting on three different ones at the same time. Those crazy italians, and their hilarious b-movie rip-offs, I just love them. Sadly Hollywood did not back then, as the film got put down by Universal Studios for "shamelessly" copying Jaws, yeah that and probably every other animal creature/feature horror b-movie made after 1976.

The artwork done on the German Blu-ray/DVD combo really does pay a fitting tribute to the film, even manages to make it look more hilarious.

I love the Last Shark. It's such an unapologetic Jaws rip-off. Vic Morrow's Quint cracks me up--plus the actual shark footage is pretty damn good for what it is.
I have yet to see Hercules Goes Bananas. Schwarzenegger was turning up in comic book ads around 1970 though--Conan and Thor comics. In actual peplum films they often did have a big muscle guy teamed up with a dwarf. Someone on another forum said they encountered an actress from this film at a party and when he mentioned the film she got embarrassed and pleaded with him not to tell anyone else about it.

I wonder who the actress was?
Tanny McDonald
He said he recognized her at a party and said "weren't you in Hercules in New York?" which he hadn't seen but knew enough about it.
"Her jaw dropped and she covered her face with her hands." then said, "Please tell me you haven't seen that thing."
He said no and she replied, "Thank God," she said. She chuckled a little, but just kept looking at the ground, then said, "just please don't mention it again."
