MisandryMermaidAmusing that you mention this--I just saw it two nights ago (for the first time)! The basic premise was decent--I'm a sucker for any and all pirate movies--but the screenplay was atrocious, the acting was only decent at best, and the "hero," the Matthew Modine character, was unbelievably wimpy. (He makes Daniel Manners look virile!) Is this last fact helped if we consider Geena Davis the hero? Possibly, but even there she does very little heroic--far less than a hero in a conventional pirate picture, which hurts the film's supposed feminist aspirations. What was good, then? Many of the stunts and much of the choreography of said stunts were very good, as was the cinematography, and the whole picture clearly inspired the Pirates of the Caribbean series. (One stunt, in which Miss Davis runs through an apartment and then falls back on the carriage on which she'd been riding, is used wholesale in the latest Pirates flick.) As a friend said when I put it on, "Any movie called Cutthroat Island can't be all bad," and, indeed, it isn't, but it isn't very good, either.

I honestly have a soft spot for this. It's not a good film but it's a definite guilty pleasure for me. The article fails to mention the one actual honest to god excellent thing about Cutthroat Island. The soundtrack is awesome. Way better than Pirates of the Caribbean!

politicidalJust wondering--do you think the movie is better than PotC or just the soundtrack? (I far preferred Black Pearl to Cutthroat Island, but I'd actually probably prefer Cutthroat Island to World's End.) I thought the soundtrack was very, very good--which was also my problem with it: it didn't seem to fit what was on screen! They'd be doing something pretty routine, and the score would be blasting with all the horns of Jericho--while, when they'd be doing something heroic, there would be a moody side to it that didn't fit. Maybe that was just part of its numerous production problems--though I do have to say that this silly movie is kinda fun from time to time.

Hmm, I'd say it's still better than On Stranger Tides and the second act of At World's End.

On the subject of female pirates, I'm surprised--nay, shocked--that, to my knowledge, no one has ever made a movie about Grace O'Malley, Ireland's infamous "pirate queen." When I was young, I listened to superb radio adaptations of old-fashioned "pyrate stories," and the tale about Grace O'Malley was one of my favorites.

There's a lot of pirates whose lives would make great movies. You'd think the PotC movies would have made it easier to get them off the ground.

I thought of Cutthroat Island immediately when I saw it! The POTC franchise seems like it borrows a lot of ideas from Cutthroat Island (1995), The Black Swan (1942), and The Crimson Pirate (1952). I have The Black Swan out from the library now, so I'll let you know if I also see anything that PotC borrowed! Thanks for letting me know about the series' other influences.

I thought the same damn thing when I saw that part. Shameless.

That’s really weird. I’d been looking for this thread, and then it vanished. And now it’s back.
Cue Twilight Zone theme music.
What’s with the “legacy” boards reappearing all of a sudden?
