At the very most 3 quarters of what the first film made

Too early, to talk about box office numbers.

I'll just say I'd be impressed if it makes anywhere close to 1 billion.

It will be the white episode, following the Kieslowski template.

I'd say anywhere from $1 billion to $1.75 billion. I don't think that people are as big on Avatar anymore. The effects are good, but that whole "CGI-only" craze is over.

Plus it seems that people aren't as kind to the film as when it first was released. Kind of like that time where everyone poked fun at Titanic or even hated it.

Avatar's 3D was, & still remains, groundbreaking... helping it as an event.
Avatar 2 & beyond will surely require another degree of tech to reach a billion, though I think the first sequel will do it on word of mouth alone.

500m domestic 1.5b OS 2 billion total I agree mostly. I feel it will fall a little short of 2b.

Everyone thought Titanic would flop, and then people had pretty much given up on any movie beating it by the time Avatar came around. So as much as I think Avatar sucks and people don't care about it anymore, I've learned not to underestimate James Cameron's skill at making money. Avatar 2 - first movie to cross $3 billion. F### it.

Top 10 all time worldwide. The first one had mega word of mouth, for 3D & IMAX ticket prices & repeat viewings, etc. While I think it'll surpass the first simply due to inflation, it would genuinely surprise me to see it surpass the first's via adjusted.
I was looking forward more to Avatar 2 than TFA. Now that we're being saturated with SW movies, Avatar still feels more eventful. There'll have to be something very epic about TLJ - Luke going super dark to protect Kylo or something, Snoke being more than a giant troll hologram. Rey's story is fine, though nothing about it feels new.

lol at some folks STILL doubting James Cameron .
Avatar 2 is going to be MASSIVE. Might not make as much domestically but overseas its going to be a juggernaut and mop the floor with the competition .

Titanic and Avatar were both gigantic at the box office so I have no reason to think Avatar 2 will not do the same. It's too early to tell, but I expect the hype to grow when trailers are released and we start to hear what kind of groundbreaking special effects James Cameron has used this time (I've heard something about underwater sequences, that would be awesome).

When Titanic was out big scale special effects movies are rare. Now they come out ever 2 weeks. No way it will get the hype that it needs.

You do have a point, almost not a single week goes by without a big special effects movie being released. I guess we won't know for sure until we get closer to Avatar 2's release date, which still is more than 3 years away.
