I saw this in original release, but re-visited it recently. I was bored, so I decided to watch part of it in French. I immediately was aware that Jane Fonda doing her own voice. It was obvious that her French was fluent. It also looked perfectly synced, so I watched the scene back and forth between English and French. Both lip-synced very well, but for at least some sentences it appeared she was originally speaking French and dubbed herself in English.

I saw Barbarella on TV a couple years ago. It made no dang sense to me. It is basically a comic book in terms of having any great meaning. Definitely style over substance.

The star looks great but I have never really enjoyed watching this movie. I've tried a couple of times but it just doesn't work for me.

I saw Barbarella in the theater around the time Klute came out, which at last put Jane Fonda on the map as a serious dramatic actress. It was on a double bill with They Shoot Horses, Don't They?. I found it entertaining enough, silly, reasonably well made. Years later, in his book on Sixties movies (Medium Cool?), Ethan Mordden nailed it when he said that things were changing so fast back then that Barbarella was dated before it hit the 'nabes, which pretty much says it all. Back then, a movie could become a time capsule in a matter of months.

I saw it on a twin bill with "Flesh Gordon". I more prefer "FG", but "Barbarella" was good and fun.

They are both pretty "campy".... Yes, but "F.G." was meant to be. So was Barbarella. It was was not so much as a trashy parody as "Flesh Gordon"... a semi-porno effort.

...another oddity to catch with Jane Fonda is "Spirits of the Dead" in which her co star is her brother Peter. It is a triptych (3 short films) produced and directed by various famous directors including Fellini...

Barbarella (1968) IMPO - Despite it's mixed feelings by most I still enjoyed this classic fun and adventitious film . To me it seems like this particular type of film is made to not be taken so seriously either . Thanks geode for this interesting trivia on the French / English dialogue too and for your subject post .

Thanks geode for this interesting trivia on the French / English dialogue too and for your subject post . For me now it is mostly the cinematography that draws me in...and I guess it takes me back to an easier time for me. I had just started college and sneaked away from studies to watch it in a matinee back about 49 years ago. I will have to look into the dialogue thing more intently. There were sentences where the number of syllables fit French more than English in the first scene after the strip tease titles.

Here is the opening credit sequence. Can anybody tell us what is not original to the 1968 release?
