Watching it, I concurred with Werner Herzog's view that there was nothing behind that bear's eyes. It did not empathise with Timmy in any way. Timothy was seeing what he wanted to see and was so damaged by society that he tried to live in an alternative society that tolerated him, until one day it didn't.
I think Timothy achieved a triumph of sorts though, in that he lived so long up to that point. Just an additional tragedy that his girlfriend paid the price too.

The only reason he lived as long as he did was because the bears thought he was mentally retarded.

There was a show I saw on depictions of the Devil and someone had done a comic strip where the Devil looked like a chicken and the artist said he was influenced by Herzog who apparently had said that he found something truly evil in a chicken's face. Kind of weird, but based on other comments I think Herzog sees Nature as inherently evil and bad so it colors his perception. There was a black bear who had been tagged by researchers and used to walk with people in the forest when they came through. Was shot by a hunter eventually.
This Grizzly Man was really selfish though--he caused the death of two bears because of his multicultural outreach.

I think his intentions were good but his methods grossly irresponsible. It is indeed a shame his girlfriend died too.

I saw that in my high school film class. I was mesmerized by it. Excellent documentary.

Watched it years ago. Possibly my favourite documentary film.
