I hope to get a proper Hound and Arya reunion. Perhaps another bar room brawl.

Just a question if you have any view on this: People believe that King Stannis Baratheon did everything because he believed it was duty. In other words duty was the most important thing for him. I dispute this notion and believe that while duty was very important for Stannis, he was also an ambitious person and used the persona of being a dutiful person to forward his ambitions. What's you take on Stannis and his being ambitious or not? Just 8 days, folks!

What's you take on Stannis and his being ambitious or not? Stannis played the duty card as and when it suited him. He seemed to place his duty to follow Robert as king above his duty not to plunge the country into civil war or his duty to his younger brother and daughter. One could also say he didn't even really have a legitimate claim anyway since Robert was himself a usurper. What's more he seemed obsessed by thinking he might be the Prince that was Promised - which had absolutely nothing to do with duty. I think Stannis is a good example of cognitive dissonance - he twisted his sense of duty to justify his all-consuming ambition which he couldn't admit even to himself. Plus Renly would have been an awesome king!

Well, now your opinion almost mirrors mine except for the Renly part. Glad we have a very similar way of analysing Stannis. But guess what I actually like Stannis with all his flaws. Most of my fellow Stannis fans turn him into a sort of robot and try to cover up all his disgraceful acts and deeds by saying that he was doing all for duty. Of course not. Duty was the card he played as you rightly pointed out and totally agree with you about him being a solid example of cognitive dissonance. He was always in doubt. In the books too he was confused about his ethics. For example his weakness surfaced when it came to issue of Edric Storm. The good thing for Stannis was that he had probably the best counsellor in all 7 kingdoms - Ser Davos.

I hope to get a proper Hound and Arya reunion. Perhaps another bar room brawl. She'll probably stab him a bunch of times. She's becoming quite the serial killer.

What's you take on Stannis and his being ambitious or not? Just 8 days, folks! Stannis is a horrible person. If anything , he's more a religious zealot than a man of duty since he will forsake his sense of duty for the appeasement of the god he worships. I don't think he did much out of duty but used duty as a mask for being slighted and looked over since at least Robert's Rebellion or specifically because of the things he had to endure during that war. His only shot at being king was Robert's death and he took it. He had no more claim than anyone else because, as his brother proved, the throne was not about destiny but about who could take it.

Although I'm kidding about Hound, she does take a little extra glee in it and will kill just because she is annoyed. I don;t think killing means anything to her as long as she doesn't have to kill someone she cares for.
