Walk for at least a mile every day. In the time it takes to walk one mile you could ride 10 miles.

Walk for at least a mile every day. Yes, and carry your weekly groceries home with you even if it's two miles. Also, run up and down stairs if possible rather than use the elevator; and do things like clean your own apartment or condo, if you can find the time, and wash dishes by hand if you live alone or only cook for a small number of people. If you commute to work by rail or bus, stand rather than sit. Every little bit counts.

Actually, walking in the city, I average more like 3.5 mph. Hiking, sometimes it's as little as 2 mph--it depends on the terrain.
But biking in the city, I average about 12 mph. On open roads I'm closer to 17 mph. I could be faster on a different bike, but I like "touring" bikes and often just ride CitiBike, which is a 3-speed.
But my brother-in-law, who rides a pro racing bike, doesn't average above 30 mph on open roads.
Anyway, I both bike and hike a ton. Two of my favorite things to do period.

I walk the whole time. If I don't get anything that's OK. I just like hiking in the woods. If I do get something it is just icing on the cake.

I used to walk a lot, but the older I get, the less I'm able to do that. Now I find swimming to be best for me. It allows for exercise without putting weight on my joints.

In the time it takes to walk one mile you could ride 10 miles. How long does it take you to walk a mile? ? Good question. My walking average is about 3 MPH. Where I most often bike is all paved and level. I have a Bell 12 function Cycle Computer and it tells me me how fast, how far and my average speed among other things. When on that bike path I average about 13.3 MPH. So when I said In the time it takes to walk one mile you could ride 10 miles I was not that far off.

Note that 3 mph is a relatively slow pace for walking though. Most people aren't going to have more than a 4 or 3.5 to 1 ratio of biking to walking.

I guess the point I am making is you can cover a lot more ground riding a bike than walking. And riding you get to take in so much more great scenery.
