I live on Oahu. That's a hard question to answer. Most "locals" don't venture into Waikiki or the touristy spots. I think Hawaii's a good vacation place for outdoorsy types (which I'm not), the neighbor islands more so. If you come from a big city, the pace might feel a little laidback; "Hawaiian time", as we call it. For my interests, it lacks a diversity of entertainment -- I have to travel to Las Vegas to get my "rock fix" several times a year.
And of course, it is a costly place to live. The housing market is going upscale condo for sales to out-of-state owners.
