Just listened to the entire thing for the first time ever. What an incredible piece of music. I will say though, the second act is very curious. Doesn't seem to fit with the first. The third act is incredible. If you're like me and have never heard it, do yourself a favor and take a look.

Agreed that it is incredible. I never thought that the second movement didn't fit with the rest of the sonata. And if you haven't listened to the other 31 piano sonatas, do yourself a favor and explore those too. There are many, many gems to be found there.

It is an amazing piece. Once upon a time I could play the entire first movement on guitar (much more difficult than it sounds!). As far as the second movement "not fitting," it was pretty common to have a piece's movements present contrasting tones. One of the things that make Moonlight so great is how varied and individualistic each movement is while still working well as a whole.
I also second cham's suggestion of exploring the rest of Beethoven's sonatas. The last five, in particular, are among the greatest pieces of music ever composed and will repay as much time as you care to devote to them. For an entire set I prefer Arrau, who really got the profundity of Beethoven like few others.

Thanks so much permutojoe for sharing this most memorable work of Beethoven and for your subject post . IMPO and in short as with all of these wonderfully known clever composers have been . They certainly were with their music most emotionally eclectic as well as versatile too - truly unforgettable .

It's odd I stumbled across this thread. Have you seen the teen French girl that plays the 3rd movement on guitar? It's kind of insane. Not sure how to post it here but I provided the link. Holy Shit

I'm a retired jazz pianist. And yet at 78 I can still play this. Should I thank God, my talent, or booze?

But what brought you here in the first place? So the Vanilla Fudge improved upon Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata?
