Though I love Metropolis (who doesn't?). The Gold Rush is also a stand out film.

I recommend these Lon Chaney, Sr. films:
The Phantom of the Opera (1925) The Unknown (1927)
His background in mime due to having two deaf parents really helps him cross the silent film barrier. He only ever made one talkie (a remake of The Unholy Three--1925 and 1930) before his early death. The Man of a Thousand Faces.
When it comes to silent films, I find the horror films and the comedies to be the easier watches, because they're so visually interesting.

And with my aforementioned Chaney film choices... These are also big ones:
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920) Nosferatu (1922) The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) (another Chaney I've seen)
Phantom is definitely my favorite silent film, though.

Besides most of the ones mentioned already, I've always thought Piccadilly (1929) was a great, overlooked film.

and, like always, DevouringTime's posts are pure treasure I'd like to mention my personal favorite Der müde Tod (lit. "Tired Death") aka. "Destiny" by Fritz Lang We ahowed it 2 times in our little arthouse club cinema with live music Once with expressionist jazz (that had been very fitting) and once with hard rock (yes, hard rock) that didn't fit well.
