In honor of Shark Week on Discovery coming up. It's true. Debate me if you must. You will lose. The scariest movie of All-Time. JAWS. Thoughts? Discuss....

I saw it from start to finish for the first time on New Years Day 1997. That summer my best friend and I took a day trip to Ocean City, Maryland and while we were swimming in the ocean I was keeping a discrete eye out for fins. Therefore, Jaws does have a psychological effect and could qualify as a scary movie.

Jaws is equivalent as King Kong, it's more of a fantasy film than a horror...

I have been all over the world and I have never set foot in the ocean.
That is because Jaws.

I used to never go in the ocean because of Jaws. Heck, I had a fear of swimming in a lake at summer camp when I was a kid because of Jaws. I have since managed to go in the ocean but I don't do it often or stay in long.

I don't see Jaws as a horror film per-se. It is a drama adventure that contains suspense and some sequences that could be considered horrific, but done in such a way like never before, ala Spielberg. I see it as a seafaring thriller and the monster is maligned, just for being its natural self, in it own natural habitat where humans are intruding. In this respect, I think Jaws is very dated and in a sense wrongheaded in its approach. Peter Benchley is apparently quoted as saying, if he knew then what he knew later about sharks, he wouldn't have written the book. I think that kinda gives the movie a bit of edge. There are some shots and movements the shark makes that are unnatural, but it's what makes the movie so fascinating. He's really a force of nature in the film.

I absolutely hate swimming in lakes, all that dark, murky water, who knows what's down there.
Give me the clear blue ocean and it's extra buoyancy any time. Yes, there are sharks, but I might have a better chance of seeing them coming.

This shark, he's a rogue shark, which makes him almost supernatural in the way he lingers and lunches. This kinda gives the movie a toe in the horror water. I remember it was used to great affect in Jaws 2 during the scene where Brody finds the burned body of the speedboat lady. He's scared that the shark is still out there, and the viewer thinks the shark intentionally placed the body there to get Brody. Or at least that what I originally thought as a kid when I watched it...and still do! It's true though that the fear brought on by this movie helped motivate the killing of sharks, but over the years, it has also inspired fans to really love them too, and to help them. Today sharks are doing swimmingly...except for places that make shark fin soup.

The poster for the book is one creepy image.
I used to get creeped out going to the ocean especially in the evening as the waves made he think a shark was in every wave. The burned body in Jaws 2 is a pretty good jump scare follow up to the Ben Gardner head in Jaws.

Huge fan of this movie.
I also highly recommend the new Jaws board game that recently came out. Initial release was exclusive to Target, but it will eventually expand to other venues. The designer of the game nailed the beats of the movie perfectly--he's obviously a big fan.

Today sharks are doing swimmingly...except for places that make shark fin soup. I saw Jaws 2 in the cinema before Jaws, which was a few years later on re-release. I never got much of a supernatural element out of the film regarding the shark, but I do get a sense of awe regarding the nature of the ocean and the terror that can lurk beneath and this is for both films.
I live in an area where sharks are a common thing, so while I am usually always mindful when swimming in the ocean, which isn't as much anymore, I usually get a parody sense of fear as per the music. I was more fearful of the stingrays I saw in abundance the other day when out on a boat and then anchored near the shoreline and had to walk in the water to get to the beach area.
It's a good thing you're not living in fear, the fear of it could kill you, like Brody! I saw the second movie first too, but I had been told the story by a morbid babysitter so I knew what was what, going in.

Just being a little kid when the first came out, my parents refused to take me and didn't want to go themselves, because they didn't want to feel scared of swimming in the ocean. A few years later when Jaws 2 came out, I went with my older sister to see it. I myself also knew much about the original film going in by then. Yeah, these movies pretty much ruined the beach for a long while afterwards.Just recently a couple of great whites were spotted in our area...How comforting!

Jaws really made you not want to go into the water at all. Period and due to sharks now coming out. Really avoid the ocean at all costs.

Someone on here ruined the movie for me by saying an oxygen tank could not blow up like that.
I like this teaser trailer for Jaws 3 (yes, it is very unfair to sharks but such a simple idea and so effective as an ad)

I agree with this at one level, but I do think JAWS touches on deep, deep, primal fear like no other movie has. I can't even get in Lake MI without panicking. But it's only when I imagine that damn fin that I get all freaked out. And I never go out to where I'm deeper than chest level. Ridiculous, but true. I also had a major JAWS dream last night. It has been a while and it was quite terrifying. The shark was right up on me when the helicopter dropped a safety rope for me and I just hung on while they dragged me to shore. Also had recurring images of Chrissie, which is just awful. I think it's been about two years since I had a Chrissie dream. And curiously enough, it was the soundtrack to JAWS 2 that was playing. Not the original score.
