There's a scene where Sondra Locke is pulled from a wagon and her clothes are being torn off by Comancheros.
Josey, watching this from a hill, pulls his pistol and takes careful aim.
As things are really about to go south for Ms. Locke, the leader of the Comancheros stops his men because Ten Bears, "Likes em fresh."
I always assumed that Josey was going to euthanize Locke to save her from a gang rape.
I've heard others say he was going to save her.
My argument against that, was that Josey fought best from the back of a horse. If saving her was the plan, I think he would have saddled up, and rode in guns blazing.
One of my personal training clients worked with Mr. Eastwood on "Flags of Our Fathers", but he never got the chance to ask him my question.

I never even considered the euthanasia hypothesis. It's plausible, but seems out of character.
It's just hypotheticals about fiction, but it seems to me a single shot into the worst of her attackers would have interrupted the assault.
