I only deal in favourites with movies. Don't care about greatest. This. My favorite films are the greatest films of all time IMO.

Of course not. If something is the greatest then it is my favorite. Why would your favorite be something that isn't the greatest? It makes no sense.

A lot of my favourite films are average or mediocre. Meanwhile a lot of great films left me completely cold....
Sometimes an average film has something that makes it greatly appealing to me, such as really liking the characters or something like that.

For me it depends. For example, The Godfather is one of my favorite films and is regarded as a great film. In contrast Gangster Squad is regarded as a "bad" movie and yet I find it an entertaining popcorn movie which was all it was meant to be.

sdm3Hell, even nostalgia stuff... speaking for myself, while those sometimes hold up i have seen a fair amount drop off for me as i don't think at this point i am THAT blinded by nostalgia as i can tell some movies i enjoyed more back in the day then i do now. but even looking at things from more of a technical/well made standpoint... does this really matter if the movie is not interesting to watch? ; because i could care less how 'great' a movie is technically etc if i am bored out of my mind. certain subject matters are just more interesting to watch than others.

I don't usually distinguish 'favourite' from 'greatest' when it comes to movies, no.
There are some exceptions to this rule, however - i.e. 2001: A Space Odyssey and Schindler's List. Both are cinematic masterpieces that nonetheless don't fall within my own personal list of 'favourite' films.

So do you distinguish what you say is your favorite movie from the movie you think is the greatest ? Personally i don`t. I do yet not definitively. I know Lawrence of Arabia is a giant film which I enjoy & respect. It is not one I'd re-watch more than once a decade. My favs are go-to's. My top 50 is a hybrid of both qualifications... the highest great film might be Schindler's List. Do I enjoy watching it? Once every 4-5yrs maybe. It is a masterpiece. Stand By Me is my fav at #1, I love it. Do critics fawn over it? Not necessarily- it'll never make an AFI list let alone its radar. #meh I've the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean, Gattaca, & HP Prisoner of Azkaban on my list... are they greater than Gone with the Wind, Gandhi, or The Dictator? Probably not no. Yet I love the former, merely admire the latter. Difference.

yes. for example: one of my favorite movies is Bewitched from 2005 -- is it the best thing I have ever seen? no.
the greatest movies are how to murder your wife and rear window.
and sometimes the greatest movie 'out there' is not the favorite of people. for example, I dislike Gone With the Wind but I watch it on TCM out of respect for the country [like it's un-American not to watch it], I also dislike all these fault in our stars movies or godfathers. I just don't get the hype of some of these 'amazing' movies.
