This is the first Peter Pan movie I ever saw (even before the Disney version). My parents tape-recorded it off TV when I was young, because they knew that I really liked the book Peter Pan. I watched this movie quite a bit when I was a kid, and I really enjoyed it. Although I saw the Disney version later in life, it never had the same impact for me that this version did. The Disney version is all fun and games with little care for the depth of the story, while this version is a dark, more serious adaptation that truly does the story right, in such a wonderful way that I think I might even like the movie better than the book.
Recently, I got the movie on DVD, and it still holds up after all these years. The special effects are spectacular, the actors have their characters down to a T, and I still get shivers from hearing the score composed for the film.
Sadly, hardly anybody I know has even heard about this movie. I'll mention it in conversation, but more often than not, the response will be "Are you talking about 'Hook?'" Or, more recently, due to another recently released movie, "Are you talking about 'Pan?'" It disappoints me that so many people people don't know about this movie, because I think it's a wonderful film with an equally wonderful soundtrack. It's a legitimately heartfelt film that might even draw a few tears at times (Peter calling all around the world for people to believe in fairies in order to revive Tinker Bell is spectacular, and still gives me shivers, and the dance between Peter and Wendy at Pixie Hollow is beautiful). One of my all-time favorite movies.
Anyone else have opinions on this film?

It's quite underrated. I've seen it sitting in the five-dollar bin at Walmart quite a few times (though o got my recent copy at a yard sale), so it shouldn't be too hard to find a copy. It's one of my favorite films of all time.

I have that film on dvd. I think it got overshadowed when The Lord of the Rings trilogy was concluding. It is a really great film, closer in tone to the book. It does deserve more notice. A well-done fantasy movie.

Easily the best live action version of the story. I have it on DVD. It is miles ahead of that wretched "Hook" and I won't even mention "Pan".

The Mary Martin version is good but it is really just a play. I know they have to do it for plays but I have never been fully happy with a grown woman playing a little boy. She looks and sounds nothing like a boy. The 2003 version is a full-up movie adaptation of the play (special effects and all) with a very talented young boy playing Peter and it works very well.

The 2003 version is a full-up movie adaptation of the play (special effects and all) with a very talented young boy playing Peter and it works very well. Oh boy, my parents bought the Mary Martin version at a garage sale a few weeks after they tape recorded the 2003 version, and I absolutely hated it. It didn't help that every time I said I wanted to watch Peter Pan, my slightly younger brother would run forward and pop in the Mary Martin version (which he actually preferred over the 2003 movie), so that I had to sit through that monstrosity (as I thought of it back then) before I could put in the version I actually wanted to watch (and more often than not, bedtime would come before that could happen). In my mind, everything about the Mary Martin version was wrong. Peter Pan was clearly a woman, the characters didn't have British accents, Wendy was freaking annoying, there was no "kiss" joke, Tinker Bell didn't trick the Lost Boys into shooting Wendy (the Lost Boys just acted stupid), Captain Hook didn't have a mustache, Captain Hook's hook was a goofy double hook thing, and the lagoon scene (one of my favorite parts of the book) was replaced with a generic forest scene. It was a pain to sit through as a kid. Years later, in high school, I stumbled across the Cathy Rigby version, and was hesitant about watching it because it was the same play as the Mary Martin version only with different actors. However, whoever directed that particular revival must have felt the exact same way as I did about the Mary Martin version, because every single freaking problem I had with that production was fixed. I literally forgot a woman was playing Peter Pan, the characters had British accents, Wendy was not annoying, the "kiss" joke was reinstated, Tinker Bell tricking the Lost Boys into shooting Wendy was reinstated, Captain Hook had a mustache, Captain Hook's hook was not a double hook (though it made the common mistake of switching it to the left hand rather than the right), and best of all the lagoon scene was back! I was very pleased with it. Afterwards, I watched the Mary Martin version again, to see if I had been too hard on it. But nope, it still sucked. I even showed it to my brother recently, and he can't believe that he used to watch that crap. He agrees with me now that the 2003 movie is the best version out there. And I think that I will always feel that way.

I think that the 2003 Peter Pan film is a very underrated movie. I saw the film in the theater with my mom when it came out. I was six years old about to turn seven when I saw the movie in the theater. I am amazed that movie wasn't a box office smash. Jeremy Sumpter was fantastic as Peter Pan, and I think that it is very sad that he didn't become a major star after the movie.

I can't really comment, as it has been some 60 years since I saw the Mary Martin version and did not even know that it existed on video as I saw it live when it was broadcast. I remember that this occurred multiple years. It most certainly required a willing suspension of disbelief due to what would be considered rather primitive "special effects" for flying, etc.

"I hope I'll die on stage at the age at 105, playing Peter Pan." Joan Fontaine
....she didn't....
