I never understood why this movie got so much hate. While it's probably not a good adaption of the show (which I never found that great to begin with) it's an extremely fun movie. I remembered going to see this with my dad when it came out and I really didn't appreciate it then, but to me it's one of those movies that gets better each time you watch it. Steve carell was for the most part a find Maxwell Smart and I'm glad he didn't try to replicate Don Adams. The only problem I had with him was it didn't feel like the same Max from the show. He was too smart in the movie I think. He was still a bumbling idiot but not as much as he was in the show and they even said in the movie Max was one of the best agents there was. In the show he was an average spy if I remember correctly but certainly not the best.
Anne Hathaway was an odd choice for 99. Maybe they were trying to go for someone who looked like a young Barbara Feldon, but the problem is with her if she's supposed to be the love interest for max it's just kind of gross. I don't know how old Steve was in this movie but I knew he was too old for Anne. Also she didn't seem to have any chemistry with Steve Carell at all. Steve was at least trying, but that could be because of how the character was written for the movie.
Alan Arkin was fine as the chief not bad,but he just seems to be playing himself here and doesen't really do much for the movie.
Dwayne was fine as well for agent 89,but I was disappointed they made him a bad guy.
Terrence Stamp as Seigfried. Ok I really like Terrence Stamp, but oh my god talk about missing it by that much (see what I did there). He was probably the worst thing about the movie. Did he even watch the show? Seigfried was never a serious character. Malcolm McDowell really should have been Seigfried in this. Talk about missed opporutunity.
One of the best scenes in this has got to be the Cone Of Scilence. I love that they threw it into to the movie first of all,but it's just so damn funny everyone trying to understand each other. There are some other good scenes especially Max's first encounter with Seigfried.
The action in this was also pretty good for an action comedy.
All in all this really didn't deserve the hate it got. I understand there were a lot of people who were disappointed it wasn't more like the show, but I think honestly they were just trying to make a spy comedy and just took the name and a few things from the show and called it Get Smart. I would still love to see a sequel even though I know it's never gonna happen at this rate and Steve carell is way too old now to be doing these kinds of movies.
I would love to know what you guys thought.
