Trite analogy, but the set-up was good and I really liked the actress playing the lead. Then the movie completely falls apart in the second half, losing my sympathy for the character. Despite the flaws, it's a decent watch for a low budget/Kickstarter project. The effects actually go over the top dumbbell . I'm feeling generous so I'm giving it a 6/10.

This is another movie I watched quite some time ago, and so I've forgotten some of it...though I do still remember thinking that it started off well. The mood that was set at the beginning with the music, the lighting and even the red credits all combined to create a really unsettling atmosphere right from the get-go. I actually liked the lead character and hated those weird folks she had to audition for over and over again (they got on my nerves pretty quickly). However, like you said, the second half was where things started to fall apart. I mean, I was willing to go along with the 'weirdness' up to a certain point...but as you said, you eventually lose sympathy for the lead character, and once that goes out the window, it just feels like, "Why am I bothering to continue watching this?". I did manage to make it all the way through the movie, but by the end it was just too much. I guess the first indicator that she wasn't quite right was when she laughed at one of her friends seriously injuring themselves (or maybe it was before that? I can't recall). We actually didn't get the full version of the scene you mentioned in spoiler tags - I had to find the unedited version online. Despite the issues the movie itself had, I must give kudos to the lead actress for really throwing herself into the role and being willing to go from looking like this... To looking like...well...you know how she winds up. Anyway, I may rewatch it if it's ever on TV again here at some point, but it's just a shame that the disappointing second half didn't live up to the promising first half.

I'd agree that the movie loses something in its second half. For one thing the whole 'secret society' sort of weirdness felt very small and part of that lack of scale that it seemed like was being set up at first probably has to do with budget. But I'd also agree that the lead actress does an excellent job at selling her descent into desperation and madness.
And I understand losing sympathy for the main character, but that is sort of the point of the whole story. It's about a woman who chooses to allow herself to be corrupted and sell out her beliefs and ideals. I think if you remained on her side the movie would have failed in its storytelling. On the other hand, maybe that's a difficult approach that they just didn't fully pull off. I think if that section of the film had been a bit more concise and brief we may not have lost our connection to her as much and been able to at least continue to understand how she get where she did if not fully sympathize.
And I have nothing in particular against gore and body horror inherently, there are some amazing films that imply such sequences and themes of course, but it sort of felt like a placeholder for when they ran out of actual provocative ideas in this one. That was a bit of a shame because it went overboard with visual gore when the earlier themes were much more personal, eerie, and poignant than just gross, which is what it devolved into.
All in all, I'd certainly keep my eye on these filmmakers in the future. It was made with a great deal of skill and showed a lot of promise. But thinking it over again, especially now when the story is so timely and ripe for this specific climate, it seems like a missed opportunity.

Yes, I realize she allows herself to be corrupted, but for me, that's like...ok...so she's bad too. There's no winner, and that lessens the impact of the story for me.

Right, but my point is I don't think that is inherently a bad character arc. I just think that it could have been handled differently to make a better impact. But that plot and character development is crucial to the whole point of the story, I think.

I think it’s one of the best horror movies of the last 5 years. But I also gave it a 6 originally... Then rewatched it and bumped it up to an 8.

Not a bad movie at all. I think the lead actress was great, and it's a decent analogy for selling your soul. It's rather tame, but it gets graphic at the end.
