"How do you like that? The guy gets laid more times dead than I do alive."The ambitious and hard working employees, Richard Parker (Jonathan Silverman) and Larry Wilson (Andrew McCarthy) is about to get the adventure of a lifetime when their sleazy boss, Bernie Lomax (Terry Kiser) suddenly invites them to spend the weekend at his "little" summer cabin, located at the Hamptons island. But the great adventure takes a nasty turn when the two discover that Bernie has decided to take a permanent vacation, all on his own, leaving his guests in a bit of a weird situation, and one where they have to rely on their imagination and a whole lot of improvisation.Another big favorite vacation/summer comedy from the 80s, and one I have seen probably even more times than any of the Vacation films, combined. I love the silly/goofy slapstick comedy and the great feel-good atmosphere, along with Terry Kiser who is a riot as the sleazy Bernie Lomax, then you have Jonathan Silverman who does a great job as the more down to earth, naive kind of guy, at least compared to his more loudmouthed, horny ass kissing pal, Larry played by Andy McCarthy. Then you have the stunning 80s babe, Catherine Mary Stewart plus the hilarious Don Calfa as the clumsy hitman, Paulie. A sequel was made not long after, and while it sure has its crazy and funny moments, I thought it was not even close to the first one. I love the whole party scene with all the shallow yuppie pals of Bernie, who suddenly just decide to crash at his beach house. I always loose it, when one of the body builders walks by and says (in a very Arnold kind of way): "Hey dude, you need to pump some iron!" By the way, here is the trailer:

Often very funny comedy. Terry Kiser steals the show as the dead guy. Don Calfa is also great as the perpetually flustered hit man. Andrew McCarthy is hilarious as the obnoxious, life of the party type Larry. Catherine Mary Stewart is gorgeous as the love interest. And Jonathan Silverman is a gas as Larry's straight man. "For Christs' sake, Larry, nobody is going to have a sex change operation, huh?" Oh...and that's a priceless cameo by director Ted Kotcheff ("First Blood") as Silvermans' father.
Since this is now owned by MGM, I'm hoping it gets a Shout! Select Blu. Or a KL Studio Classics release. Either way works for me.

I often wondered that IF a remake was in the happening, a guy like Robert Downey Jr. could be a good choice as Bernie Lomax. I did not now that Larry's dad was actually Ted Kotcheff. Thanks for the info heysweden. That scene is priceless, and I guess so many young men/teenagers can relate to that scene/part, when trying to impress their girl/date, then only to have their dad/parents showing up and making a mess and embarrassing the hell out of you. Horrible video quality, I know but that is the only scene I could find at the moment. Still funny though. Since this is now owned by MGM, I'm hoping it gets a Shout! Select Blu. Or a KL Studio Classics release. Either way works for me.
I have two versions of the film on DVD, one on region 1 and the other on region 2, with not much "bonus" material, and this is the kind of movie that has become quite the cult-classics, often quoted and made fun of either in a good or bad way, it really do deserve a better treatment, and hopefully some new interviews from the actors/director etc. Hopefully a worthy special edition will come out, sooner or later.

I haven't seen it for some time, but I remember enjoying it. It's on my to-be-rewatched pile.
