If you know Dirty Harry, you know what I'm talking about. When viewers attack the actors who play despicable characters because they can't distinguish between one and the other. Andrew Robinson is probably the most extreme case, there have been others, the girl from Little House with the blonde curls, had a can of soda thrown at her during a parade once because somebody was mad at her for being mean to the Ingalls girl, some British actor who plays a serial killer in soap opera talked about an old woman either hitting him, or throwing a bottle at him, because she hated the man he played.
And then there are actors who have played some downright intolerable characters, but we never hear about anything similar happening to them. Who among these are you surprised haven't had similar treatment from the viewing public?
Most of the criminals on Law and Order: SVU, especially the guy that played William Lewis, I was so sure SOMEBODY was going to see him in public and attack him for what his character did to Olivia Benson, and if not him, Greg Yates and whoever the other serial killer was, but in general every actor who ever played a pedophile on the show.

People who can't distinguish between an actor and his/her roles are mentally ill and need help

Good question. Haven't heard of anything like that happening in recent years. The smear campaign against Leslie Jones from Ghostbusters does come to mind in terms of rancor but that seems like a case of comparing apples and oranges.

Margaret Hamilton had several children for years make snide remarks because of the wicked witch of the west as well.

There isn't anyone as famous now--the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz was so famous and let's face it-she is a damn scary mean persona in that.
Ditto for Andrew Robinson. At the time such a high profile role--unfortunate that he got such a reception but I suppose it means he was so effective!
"This one's on the house!"
Maybe Aaron Eckhart in In The Company of Men? But he isn't as effectively nasty as Robinson was either.
The kid in the Phantom Menace. He was bullied for years--though in that case it was not due to his effectiveness in portraying a mean character.
Maybe Kevin Spacey? For Glengarry Glen Ross, Seven, and The Usual Suspects.
A jerk in all three. I was hoping he would get stopped by someone in the Usual Suspects.

Since Jones is a hate filled homophobic and general bigot it's a bit disingenuous to say it was a smear campaign.

Hahaha! Good one! Well, the guy who played William Lewis is 6'5" so maybe no one is crazy enough to mess with him

Doug Hutchinson from the Green Mile. He stepped on Mr Jingles! Oh yeah, forgot about that one, Percy Whetmore. Though in the same boat I'm surprised the guy that played Wild Bill never got people coming after him, Percy stepped on a mouse but Wild Bill murdered 2 girls.

People who can't distinguish between an actor and his/her roles are mentally ill and need help A prime example of this for me was a guy on IMDb saying that the reason they couldn't have The Joker in the follow-up to "The Dark Knight" because The Joker died. I said Joker was alive at the end of that movie, then he says he was talking about Heath Ledger. All I could say was "Yeesh!"

George Reeves was the biggest victim.
Doug Hutchinson married a 16 year old when he was 51.

When viewers attack the actors who play despicable characters because they can't distinguish between one and the other. The guy who plays Ramsey Bolton on Game of Thrones, Iwan Rheon. I cant believe he hasn't been shot at! lol I hope not of course. But that guy is good at being bad. And he's going to play another villain in Inhumans!
