"I got three counties' worth of kin that expect a certain amount of justice for that death! I'm just trying to save both of us a lot of bloodletting."Truman Gates (Patrick Swayze) is usually a hardworking, though but fair cop but when he gets the news that his youngest brother has just become the latest victim as a result of a tragic outcome with the Chicago mob, he decides to fight back, and together with his older and more vengeful brother Briar (Liam Neeson) the two of them are about to show the city boys how they dish out justice, country style! Another late 80s action/adventure, starring Patrick Swayze and while maybe not as solid or entertaining as the action cult classic that is Road House (1989), I kind of enjoyed watching Swayze teaming up with Liam Neeson to kick some serious Chicago mobster ass, and thought it was even more funny seeing how a young Ben Stiller was trying to pose as a threatening figure, standing beside the more menacing Adam Baldwin. The brotherly relationship between Swayze and Neeson I thought was the key to what kept the film above the more "mediocre" action stuff of that era, and I was surprised to see how bad of a reputation it had, but then again so I was when seeing some of the reviews of Road House. Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Andreas Katsulas and Ted Levine also star in this enjoyable action film that at times feels a lot like like the earlier and more urban inner city cop films of Steven Seagal.

I found "Next of Kin" quite solid. Not really inventive, nonetheless a grounded, tough as nails slow-boil action joint. Basically forgotten because of the time it was released, but it's actually well-crafted. Familiar themes of loyalty, family and poetic justice. The dependable cast keeps you watching and really dug the night time final assault in a graveyard.
