I'd say, currently, 1) Doctors (BBC) 2) Emmerdale (ITV) 3) Coronation Street (ITV) Gasps galore, I hear, at #1 Doctors and no mention of EastEnders, but it's all about personal faves, what?

I will definitely agree with you on Doctors being top - especially at the moment, when all the other Brit soaps are lagging dreadfully. Then... 2) Coronation Street (ITV) 3) EastEnders (BBC) I don't watch Emmerdale, soz!

Yes, the sheer variety of Doctors makes it must-see viewing, in my eyes. Plus it's good to see guest appearances by jobbing actors you are familiar with from other stuff!

I don't care if we're in the minority, I think Doctors rocks!
Most likeable regular cast out of all the soaps an' all, in my opinion.

I only watch Coronation Street and Neighbours, but this is about UK soaps so I can't include the latter. Does Casualty count as a soap?

I'm not sure if Casualty fits the bill as a soap. I would tend to only go with the shows they feature on the Soap Awards. Like a lot of the UK, I used to watch Neighbours but haven't now for the best part of a decade. I heard Dee is back from the dead though, haha.

I like that you have places to post about the British serials here.
I love Coronation Street. It's my fave. I go back and forth on EastEnders. I've just started watching Emmerdale and I'm still learning the characters but it's enjoyable so far.

Yeah - it won't be nearly as good as the proper imdb boards but at least some of the regular posters from there can congregate here. My impressions on Corrie and EastEnders fluctuates, depending on what kind of a phase either of them are going through. EastEnders at the moment is in a very strange mood, what with the new producer tinkering around with its usual tone. Corrie I'm finding tough going at the moment, but it will hopefully find a way back to its default standard.

Years ago when I was in college, I used to watch EastEnders since it aired on the weekends on my local PBS affiliate. But the episodes were four or five years behind. And since they only showed two episodes on Saturday and two on Sunday, for a total of four, they kept falling behind. I stopped watching it for many years, because the town I moved to after college did not have a PBS affiliate that showed the series. Recently I've been catching up on some episodes on DailyMotion and it's fun to see the guy who plays Phil on the show and now he has grown kids. It's like waking up from a coma and seeing all these people had gone on with their lives!
I became hooked on Coronation Street during the past few years when the episodes were available on Hulu. Then last March, Hulu stopped adding new episodes. I didn't realize I could see it on Daily Motion so I went from April to December without watching it. I would read up on the storylines and was sad I was missing it on screen. But now I've been catching up, just in time for the birth of Leanne's baby. The triangle with Leanne-Peter-Nick is my fave, and I like Toyah added to it, with Carla gone.
Since there was a change in producers from Stuart to Kate during the time I didn't watch, I can see the changes on Corrie very clearly. There's still humor, but a lot less, with more emphasis on melodrama-- the actresses who play Leanne, Toyah and Michelle excel in this area, so it works. There have been obvious cast changes-- I miss Kylie and think David is kind of rudderless right now. I really miss Oliver Farnsworth as Andy, I just loved watching that guy and am glad he didn't die on camera-- so I'm hoping he comes back and blackmails Phelan. I was hoping Emily would have returned from Peru, but it looks like she is not coming back.
In addition to the shift from humor to melodrama and the cast changes, I think another difference is that the episodes feature less characters. They aren't trying to cram so many stories into an episode, which I prefer, since we can go in-depth with the ones on screen. I love the Johnny-Jenny pairing and under the previous producer, I think they would have been filler, but the new producer is really building Jenny into someone who will run the shop with Johnny which I find to be very interesting. I am glad they toned down Sally-- the story where she was running for office against Norris was over the top and she is less of a cartoon now. I also like the story with Ken's do-not-resuscitate order, since I think it gives Tracy something more human to play. So while I see the show has a different tone now, I like it and am sure that as Kate the new producer gets more comfortable, it will find its stride again. It's a transition period but a good transition.
As I said earlier, I'm still learning the characters and stories on Emmerdale but I really like the diversity in terms of age ranges depicted, and I like that we have a lot of working class, rural characters-- plus a family of cons that are trying to get rich quick. The first episode I watched was the one where Joanie died in the van, and it was shocking. I thought, wow, that was totally unexpected. American soaps seem kind of predictable but I could tell right away that Emmerdale is not predictable, and it made me want to keep watching it. I also love all the outdoor scenes. I feel like it's a real village, a real soap community.

I have to go with Doctors, Corrie, Eastenders, in that order. I only watch the 3, but I only watch Easties out of habit and if I miss bits here and there, I'm not too bothered. I'm using my "normal" up to date forum handle now, but I was on IMDB as ballroom_babe_uk.

We want to rescue as many people as we can from the imdb boards before they shut down ( )

i'd say it's Pears Soap...
barring that attempt at humour, Corrie would win - though I've stopped watching. When the off'd Sunita, then Tina, I started to lose interest in the way things were going...

That was around the time I started watching, so I didn't have much invested in those two emotionally.

I like "Eastenders". I also watch it on PBS. We're on the series from 2009. It's a guilty pleasure.

Originally I watched (from the beginning) Eastenders on my local PBS station and when they decided to dump it (especially when 'Dirty Den' who was one of my favs, came back from the dead) I was so angry. So then I started watching Emmerdale on a Canadian station, until the CBC decided to dump it, again I was angry. Then it was 'Coronation Street' ( I watched for awhile on the aforementioned Canadian channel) but decided to get rid of cable, so no more UK soaps for me. One thing that always stood out for me was that the people looked like 'real' people, no over the top makeup, clothes, etc. unlike US soaps most were wealthy with maybe one or two lower income families.
