That about sums it up. But I'm thinking of anything from Bela Lagosi to Hammer films, right up to things like Underworld or The Crow?
I know this gets into dicey territory under the definition of "cult" but I'm inquiring about particular "genres" of film.
Anyone?

I'm a fan of anything dark, and can appreciate this variety on different levels, each to their own merit and not to compare and contrast necessarily. As I said, I think it's the genre in particular that I find myself particularly drawn to. Ever since I was a kid and watched Dark Shadows after I got home from grade school. The Dark sunk her fangs into me at a young age and it's still biting...

Not exactly a fan, but I enjoy the occasional Lair of the White Worm.

You need to watch The Black Cat immediately if you have not already done so. It stars Bela Lugosi and my avatar.

Dust Devil 1992 Lost Highway? Lost Highway! OMG, I forgot about that one! I love anything (ie: theatrical, movies, artwork, music, fashion, jewelry, etc.) that involves anything "dark." I also like twists on Catholicism. Things involving the Occult. From camp to deep and philosophical, ripe with metaphors, I find it all quite fascinating.

I like vampire movies but I prefer the older ones. The 80s and before that. I think Twilight and movies like that are a joke and it's annoying how vampires are all feminine and scrawny now. Give me some Jerry Dandridge from Fright Night or a scary vampire like Bela Lugosi. Not these ones who look like you can snap them in 2.

The Dark sunk her fangs into me at a young age and it's still biting... I used to be into the Goth scene, so I can relate. As for movies, I cannot stand vampire films. Ugh! The subject doesn't interest me in the least bit. And the whole "vampires vs werewolves" thing is just plain stupid. It worked well in the original Underworld film, but beyond that it's just nonsense. One particular "dark" film I happen to like is The Game of Death, also known as The Suicide Club (2000) starring Jonathan Pryce and David Morrissey. It's got a gothic feel without any overt horror.

I liked Lair Of The White Worm and a few other modern Gothics, overall I prefer black and white classic horror of the 1931-46 period, though I can enjoy the occasional William Castle flick, some of Roger Corman's efforts, also some Hammer horrors, I think Rosemary's Baby is terrific but overall I'm more into mood, ambiance if you will, which includes art direction, lighting, editing, costumes, acting, I suppose, and style overall, basically style more than substance. I'm not seriously into vampires, werewolves, zombies and the like but if a movie featuring one of those creatures works, I like it. Jacques Tourneur's Curse Of The Demon is a favorite of mine.

IMPO - These particular dark films come to mind for " demonic " or " possibly cult or gothic horror " ? : 1. The Exorist (1973) 2. The Amityville Horror (1979) 3. Silent Hill (2006) 4. Book of Shadows : Blair Witch 2 (2000) 5. Trilogy of Terror (1975 - TV Movie ) 6. Burnt Offerings (1976) 7. Fall of the House of Usher (1960) At the moment these are all the ones I can think of . Thanks Merrida for your excellent subject post here .

I was in high school when a drive in theatre near my school (I went to boarding school) was showing The Exorcist. My friend and I snuck in and sat in front of the Concession Stand munching popcorn and watching this movie. Then we had to walk back to the dorms. In the dark. Past a graveyard. (I can't make this stuff up!) Gave me nightmares!
Burnt Offerings is another one. I've always thought Karen Black was super sexy and so I was crushed out on her. I've been a Bette Davis fan from way back. It was Bette Davis' performance that scared the crap out of me. And the hearse driver. Ever since I saw that movie, despite the fact that I consider myself as having a dark Gothic soul, I get the heebie-jeebies when I see a hearse go by. Given the time and date and age, watching Davis change really did freak me out and certainly made for some crazy dreams.
Fall of the House of Usher. Another one that was scary. Also The Pit and the Pendulum (as a kid, made me suspicious of noises I'd hear in the house...and as an only child, a latchkey kid, that was easy to do!)
It's hard to believe, looking back on my reactions then, at that time, to those movies, compared to how when I sort of "came into my own" and really cultivated a taste and preference for horror movies, it's so surprising. I remember my mother feeling I was disturbed because of the music I'd listen to, reading Edgar Allan Poe, wearing all black, painting one wall in my room black,... And to think here I am, and I still find all of those things so endearing and comforting.
I used to do charcoal gravestone rubbings too. Gosh golly!

Wouldn't call it vampire, gothic, or demonic; rather I would call it disturbing or messed up, but I like this movie when I can bring myself to watch it. I don't know anyone else who likes it, but "Necromentia" (2009) could give you nightmares. Drug use, suicide, eternal suffering -- it has all the weirdness one could stomach. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necromentia

I've never heard of that movie, but it does sound like something I would watch. A few other disturbing (though not Gothic/Horror films) would be Requiem For a Dream and also Pi. Very unsettling, to be sure.
I have enjoyed films, regardless of ratings, if they provide some interesting psychological or aesthetic appeal, unusual subject matter, things that are not considered viable for mainstream.
I like provocative art and literature that evokes visceral feelings and encourages people to think and discuss, to be either unsettled or comforted, but that regardless is stimulating.

Seems totally cool to me here Merrida black is actually my top favorite " color " ( or in fact absence of color ? ) next to red and midnight blue - I so agree black is so relaxing and cozy . Night time is also my favorite part of the day too ( I'm also a fan of what is mysterious or unexplained too ) . Thanks for sharing your story here with us also ( I can totally relate here ) . Also another movie I just thought of for this list of mine it was when you mentioned here " gravestone rubbings " . 8. Sleepwalkers (1992) That was another eerie one but it did have a hit or two of dark humor as well . Thanks again Merrida .

Wednesday Addams is my spirit animal. I'll wear a different colour when they make a colour darker then black. Yep, I'm with you on these things. I'm definitely a creature of the night. I love the moon. And while some of us night creatures do fine in the day, I do not. My skin and eyes do not like the sunlight. I have ultra sensitive hearing as well, and heightened senses of touch and taste.
I've never gotten used to the daytime, even when I had to open at 4:30am or 4:45am, and was always told "You'll get used to it!" Uhm, yeah, no. Nope. Never did. I have a parasol (yep, really do!). I feel energized and powered up by moonlight and thunder storms.
I used to wear corsets, but sadly those have gone by the wayside, at least for now. I haven't been able to dress truly how I feel, but I think you get the picture of what my aesthetic is like.
You should see how I decorate,...I have vampire pictures, mummified bats above the bed, occult styled dream catchers made with bones and feathers and crystals.
That plus a lot of vintage stuff (furniture, artwork, bookcases, dressers, etc.)
So evidently I never did "outgrow" this, and evidently this was not some type of rebellious "phase" that I went through from angst. Nope. These are the things that make me feel calm and good and happy and bring me joy!!

Awesome Merrida doing what makes you comfortable within yourself and standing by it shows a lot of courage and confidence - I totally admire that . Oh also I have a few more " Dark Storyline Suggestions " for other cult type movies and even a few classic TV Shows of the same you may be interested in ( these are some of my favorites ) . Although if you have seen these already or not interested - that's cool too . TV Shows : 1. Night Gallery 1969 - 1973 2. Dark Angel 2000 - 2002 Movies : 1. Night of the Demon 1957 2. Dead of Night 1945 PS - Wednesday Addams is my favorite character on the Addams Family . I especially like the movie versions with actress Christina Ricci she's one of my top favorite actresses too .

The classic Hollywood titles yes but the modern ones are either too gory but with no story OR just plain stupid and unwatchable.
