I really don't understand the hate. I get his movies not being someone's thing, but it seems like people love to hate his work.

Because he's super popular and in some cases overpraised.

Who the fuck knows, and who the fuck cares. He makes excellent movies.
All the Nolan haters I've seen really don't have a reason/explanation to why they think his films are bad. They just bitch and whine about his success and are hard to take seriously.

They just bitch and whine about it and are hard to take seriously. Well they do though. I'v seen many people complain about exposition, sloppy writing, dull style (or lack of style) and that he's bad at directing action scenes. They also claim he is a pseudo intellectual and that his movies are pretentious. I don't agree but they have certainly stated reasons.

No one in real life hates him. It's just people on the internet who think hating what everyone likes is cool and "badass".

Because he's super popular and in some cases overpraised. Yeah definitely this. I see some of it as backlash over how much praise and adulation he and his films get from his fanboys despite not always warranting it. For example, you go on IMDB's top 250, and Dark Knight is at number 4, Inception is at number 14, Interstellar is at number 32, The Prestige is at number 47, and Memento at number 48. That's 5 in the top 50 from a director who only just established himself this century. I expect Dunkirk will be in there before long too. No way is he that good.

I think some people are rubbed the wrong way by the more vocal section of his fanbase. He's one of my favorite directors but I don't expect everyone to share my opinion.

There's definitely some insidious positive feedback loops here. He seems to have fans who see in him the Second Coming - for some odd reason. Then there are detractors who view him as the Antichrist - for some odd reason. I suspect they're feeding off each other. What got this cycle started in the first place? That's the real mystery.

I first noticed it with the Dark Knight Rises, once that came out.

Its a generation thing. Todays audience all claim to be super smart and are too arrogant to admit they dont like getting fooled. Since most Nolans movies contain a twist, this makes Nolan haters want to "expose" him extra critically. So many times Ive seen comments like, "seen that ending a mile off" "figured out the films plot in the first 10 mins" "easily predictable ". They are so obsessed with trying to figure out his style so they can rave about their accomplishments on the internet that they forget to just enjoy his movies without attempting to be a school examiner.

He's a great director. Its the people who act as if Nolan created movies that are the problem.

Love Nolan. And can't wait for Dunkirk. Really, the only film of his that I flat out didn't like was Interstellar .

The Dark Knight. Fanatical Nolan/Batman fans managed to get TDK to #1 on the IMDb top 250 by encouraging people to vote TDK a 10 and all other films in the top 10 a 1, and it worked. I know it happened, I was on the board for that film while it was in theaters and saw threads about the entire scheme. Personally, I don't care about that stuff. I love TDK, but it's nowhere near the best film ever made in my opinion. More to the point, I'm not overly concerned with where others rank particular films. But obviously some people take it far too seriously. Nolan and his fans receive backlash on the internet to this day because of it, and some of his fans decide to constantly rave about his work essentially just to troll people (my view, anyway). Again, I count myself as a fan of Nolan but I don't take part in fan wars. He isn't perfect; hell TDKR was absolutely terrible if you ask me. But so far as I can tell, TDK was the beginning of it all.

I don't hate him at all, but while I think he's a very talented director, he's also vastly overrated.

After Interstellar(2014), how can anyone hate Nolan? Its one of the greatest movies ever made, freaking loved it I really enjoyed that one. Memento is a masterpiece I feel. Dunkirk had not piqued my interest, but based on reviews, I may go now. If the visuals are theater worthy that is. If not, I'll rent it. This is turning out to be the best summer movie season we've had for some time.
