how blah the movie affected me. I saw it many times, and thought it was rather good. But this time, it felt lacking in tension and a bit overdone.
I may have to watch it again later this year to see if my mind can be changed.

I like the film.
Just a shame the two BBC TV adaptations (which predated the film, telecast 1939 and 1947 respectively) are lost...would be fun to compare the differences.

If you watch a movie many times it's bound to lose the effect eventually.

I you watch a movie many times it's bound to lose the effect eventually. I watch a lot of movies repeatedly. I cannot count the many times I've seen The Maltese Falcon, The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, Casablanca, The Searchers, The Changeling, etc., and never get tired of them. I was probably not in a very receptive mood.

I you watch a movie many times it's bound to lose the effect eventually. True, but there are also cases where a regularly watched film can become comforting like an old pair of shoes....(I feel that way with "Grease").

I mean there is a reason you found it suspensful the first however many times you watched it.

Hitchcock's theme was usually about the society being bad or failed, especially the white man.
In this case it has the extra element of a WW 2 connection--a dumbed down critique of eugenics.
It seems quaint today, maybe even simplistic to the point of intellectual dishonesty.
But at the same time, it also taps into the distrust of academics. Nevertheless as I said, the culprit is not a foreign-sounding professor/students, but Americans.
One admires the craftsmanship that went into the film but there's something offputting about it too. Like in Rear Window when the dog is killed and the woman is screaming at her neighbors about how awful they are.
And James Stewart overcomes the threat, but ends up with two broken legs. It's like "haha you still lose." There's something a little twisted to it all.
Maybe Melanie Griffith was right-Alfred was a sicko!

I'm surprised. It's one of the better Hitchcock movies for me and one of the few I have no problem watching whenever it's on.

I also watched this film last night on TCM ( and have this movie on DVD as part of my AH'S Masterpiece Collection - the red velvety box set ) . IMPO - I always thought what added a bit more depth to this film was it's trailer and watching it before the movie too because it seemed to have a better understanding of the main lost character David . Rope (1948) Official Trailer #1 - Alfred Hitchcock Movie Thanks so much TheOriginalPinky for your subject post .

I've watched Rope several times and I think it holds up well on repeat viewings. It could just be in your head. If you're not in the right frame of mind for a movie, it can be an underwhelming experience.

The one shot gimmick is forced, but given the allusion to a rope, they should have gone full out with it. I think there's about three cuts in the movie?
Staid movie, kinda boring. Not swayed by Jimmy Stewart's character.

This happens with most mysteries/thrillers for me. The rewatchability is based on how it is filmed, the editing, & and the shots help feed the tension of the scene.
Rope relies too much on talking to be the tightest of thrillers for me

I'll be rewatching 'Detective Story' this evening for at least the 12th time.
Looking forward to it.
