At last, a thread for the grandaddy of all 70s disaster films, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE! Yep, this is the one that started it all, and I remember being quite enthralled with all the cardboard characters in the movie. The "flipping over of the ship" sequence is the highlight, and it didn't disappoint the first time I saw it. The second and third times, however....
I couldn't help but notice that while people are being thrown about, stuff on the tables doesn't move at all. As the ship tips, we see people slipping to the side and trying to hold on, yet the tables are upright! And the chairs, too! What's wrong with this picture?
People flying about, a piano crashing, there are tumbles galore, the big Christmas tree is turned upside own, and all the while, the chairs and tables are stationary.
And later, that very weird shot of people hanging from the tables and chairs that are now GLUED TO THE CEILING/FLOOR, for some reason. Huh?

Wouldn't the chairs and tables BE bolted down due to waves?

I wouldn't want to watch this before going on a cruise.

I would think tables for sure would be bolted down. Not so much the chairs.

It's very good but I prefer The Towering Inferno. For some reason I still can't figure out, I got both movies to give to my library, and they took The Poseidon Adventure, but they wouldn't touch The Towering Inferno, or Earthquake for that matter, I wonder why?

Prefer the Towering Inferno but still like Poseidon Adventure.
It turned over because Leslie Neilsen was the captain. "I can hold my breath a loooong time."

It's very good but I prefer The Towering Inferno. Me too. A lot of great stars in TTI and we get to see McQueen and Newman together!

I really enjoyed this movie as a kid. First time you learn being out of shape can kill you even if you were athletic.

Hello, You know what ? Watching Star trek into darkness, i could not help but keep comparing the dark uniform they put on Benedict Cumberbatch with a clergyman outfit and keep on thinking about the poseidon movie. That, and gulping down a dictionnary about 'evil' over one month reading, lead me into creating the hypothtsis that jj abrahams had committed an exorcism movie... Duh. Till later, T

I like all three, but like "Poseidon" more. "Towering Inferno" came across too much like a soap opera while "Earthquake" just seems like a B-movie (albeit a good one). The people in "The Poseidon Adventure" all seemed like ordinary people caught in an extraordinary circumstance.

It might have been customary at that time to bolt the furniture to the floor, it isn't now. This movie gave me nightmares as a kid. Oddly enough, watched it again and the sequel on board a cruise to Alaska, not as traumatizing as an adult.

I've recently watched all 3 original versions (the first one, the made for TV remake, and the 2006 remake.) Part 1 is a classic no doubt.
The 2005 made for TV version is ok. I prefer the original cast. The new characters are new altogether or combined from the original. They just don't measure up. One interesting plot is the Boat begins to flood because of bombs set off by terrorists instead of a rogue wave. I give it a few points for daring to spice it up a bit.
The 2006 one is obviously faster paced. A lot of subplots were cut. (Actually wouldn't mind an extended cut.) It's almost like a disaster slasher film. I liked the characters. Felt bad when they got killed. Nice effects. The original is superior. But it's still a fun fast paced Popcorn flick.
I haven't watched "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" but plan on dvring it soon. I know it doesn't have a good reputation. But overall I'm a fan of Disaster films in general. Couldn't pass up watching it.

The best disaster movie of them all, and the only one in my library. It's my New Year's Eve tradition every year. Earthquake was a bad soap opera with an earthquake stuck in the middle, The Towering Inferno, while entertaining, just felt bloated. Airport '77 was the most entertaining in that franchise, though pretty far-fetched was still well-made and -acted.

The Rock is filming a movie about his Wife and Daughter stuck in a high rise on fire. He is also being framed for murders. Ironic considering his other film "San Andreas" was like a pg-13 more action oriented "Earthquake".

I caught The Poseidon Adventure on TV a few years back almost by accident, watched it expecting it to be a Campfest, what with Leslie Nielsen as the skipper. I was quite surprised when it turned out to be a tense, moving, down to earth and highly emotional film about how people survive in life under(extremely) difficult circumstances. There were so many factors as to why some characters died and others didn't; and a lot of it had to do with luck and opportunity as much as character, which struck me at times as uncomfortably close to real life. The movie made me think and feel in ways I didn't expect to as the result of watching a disaster flick.
