I have seen many sports movies based on true life events like "Glory Road", "McFarland, USA" , "Million Dollar Arm", "Coach Carter", "the Blind Side" etc etc etc etc. And I couldn't help but notice that they follow an almost identical template: 1. The main protagonist (teacher/coach) notices potential in kids that everyone else thinks are a lost cause. 2. There is quite a bit of initial hostility and reluctance between the two. 3. The kids lose their first match 4. Slowly the kids warm up to the coach 5. The kids star performing extremely well, winning many tournaments/games 6. Some conflict arises, either with the kids themselves, their parents etc. 7. The conflict is resolved and the kids win the big final tournament in an exciting fashion 8. The end of the movie has text giving a brief description of what each student and the coach did after the events of the movie. I guess it's a case of "seen one, seem em' all", even though they are based on true life events.

I was thinking more along these lines. Athlete struggles for success then is hit with an affliction. The athlete struggles back (Fear Strikes Out) or succumbs (Pride of the Yankees, Brian's Song).
One from this genre, Bang the Drum Slowly, is almost a spoof but becomes one of the most poignant. Might be my favorite.

If the formula is not broken, rinse and repeat.
